What's the best CRT refresh rate?

I currently run 85 Hz on my new computer. Anything less tends to give induce headaches. The video card and monitor are both capable of 120 Hz at the highest resolutions I'll ever use, 1600 X 1200, although they're capable of up to 2048 X 1536.

Is there an advantage to using the highest available refresh rate at any given resolution? Disadvantages? Or should I just stick with 85 Hz? I was thinking that more is better, unless it generates needless heat that could shorten component life. Thanks in advance...

I have always ran 85, and do so today.
I run my 19" monitor at 1024x768.
If I turn the Hz down, it flickers a bit.

85 seems to be a good number.

Always try to keep above 72hz, 85 should be fine. Anything much higher than this is of questionable benifit as its way faster than the human eye can detect. If you continue to have headache problems consider an LCD monitor, unless of course your an avid high speed gamer in which case stick with CRT, and keep your eyes off any screen for ten continious minutes each hour.

There are only 3 LCD monitors on the market now suitable for high speed gaming.

Pick up the new Maximum PC mag.
What is the best LCD monitor on the market?
The new Dell 2001 FP sized at 20.1".

No ghosting at all with this puppy, and I am thinking about getting it later.

The prior months issued reviewed around 10 LCDs, and only these 3 from the new mag qualified for gaming.
The rest did not make it.

The higher refresh rate, the easier it is the for an eye. So, if your monitor supports up to 120hz, definitely go for it!

As far as disadvanteges of higher refresh rate... There are none really. The only thing what you monitor might die in 25 years instead of 30, but by that time nobody will be using CRTs anyway.

And remeber, you can always replace the monitor but you can never replace your eyes, so stay with the highest refresh rate your monitor will support.
