What do I do about picture theft?

As many of you know, I am parting out a 99 4Runner. I sold the seats a while back to a guy in Tacoma, WA (who gave me quite a bit of grief might I add) I now see that the seats are up for sale on craigslist: http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/pts/286839620.html

While him selling them is none of my business, he is using two pictures of MY TRUCK, (the two interior shots) which I took with my camera, to sell his seats. What can/should I do about this? The pics are not technically copyrighted, so legally I suppose I can't really do anything.

I just dont want his seat sale coming back to me, or people snooping around thinking perhaps I stole his truck and im parting it out, or something along those lines.

Any advice would be great. Thanks all!

Is he using the images that you were hosting or just the images of the seats? IF he isnt stealing your hosting I wouldnt worry about it.

If he is using the hosted ones I would replace the pics with some crazy pics (aka porn, clowns, anything) If he is using your pics you send him and he has them saved I would respond to him and let him no that the pics where copy righted and he owes you a 100 bucks for the uses of them each. Or just ask him to pull the pics nicely.

your pics ARE automatically copywritten once you take em. he did not ask permission to use them. if he's linking to your hosted pic, change the pic with something offensive like porn as stated but keep the filename/location the same.

if he infact right click'd & saved, and is hosting them himself...thats copyright infringement. i'd contact craigslist and let them know he's using your images which you didnt agree with. you can link them to your FS thread or whatever. you can even provide craigslist with originals. let the seller know that those are your images, and he is in 100% violation of copyright laws. if it really bothers you, you can threaten legal action, as he is in fact using your images without your permission for monetary gain. but ask him nicely first..if he's being a dick...threaten legal action or ask craigslist to pull the ad, or at least warn him.

Well, I sent him a nice letter saying that I would like him to remove them. If he doesn't, I will contact craigslist.

If this is your ONLY worry, then why waste the energy? I see nothing in those photos that could lead back to any specific truck or person. No license plate, no identifying marks of any kind.

Go to the link and in the upper right side you can select "prohibited". That flages his posting. Repeat flags by members will remove his posting. You can also make a report to craigslist and give them the details.

But the point is, especially today, that you can never be too careful. If he would have asked, perhaps I would have allowed him to use them.

I would always rather be safe than sorry.

If someone came into your house, and took a Welder that you were not using, and had not used in 4 months, with the intention of returning the NEXT DAY but did ask, you would have a problem with that, right? I know thats a long stretch for a comparison...but it goes back to respect.

thats not the point. the point is the misuse of property for monetary gain. yeah sure whatever is on the internet is fair game...unless you get called out on it. copyright infringement IS illegal and yes this is an example of it albeit on a very basic scale. I work in the imaging business, and know very well the value of intellectual property.

the craigslist seller is a lazy SOB and cant take pics of the items he's selling himself. if he wants to use the PO's images...sure. but ask first. i think thats something referred to as common sense? or maybe common courtesy?

im sure you wouldnt appreciate it if someone took something of yours, regardless of what its value is, and sold it.

yep, i flagged it once from firefox, and once in internet exploder

i hate people that jack my pics, i resize all mine down to 800x600 and put my name, copyright, and year on them all using http://www.freeimagebrowser.com/resize/

thats a good idea. I just use photobucket, but i think I may switch it over to that. Does it automatically put that copyright on them?

Doesn't matter if it has a copyright. If someone wants the pic they will get it one way or another. For example, a picture that has copyright protection, you can't right click on it, you can hit the print screen button on the keyboard and paste it to photoshop.

that program is for resizing, and has an option for the text... you download it, and still use photobucket. It takes an entire folder of pics, and resizes/watermarks them, and saves to a new folder... you could always put it across the middle, cuz in mine it could always be cropped out
