When I was in San Francisco last week, I noticed alot of the airport shuttles run on natural gas. Anyone know why?

There's a lot of public transportation that runs on CNG. Maybe a political thing? I can see that it might be easier for a private business to buy the vehicles from the same suppliers of gov't vehicles.
EDIT: maybe it's more cost effective or attracts more customers? |

The CNG gives lower emissions, better mileage, more power, and it should be cheaper to buy.

^^^^^^ what he said^^^^^
id rather have H20 dripping out of the back than be choked by a fog of black smoke as the buss takes off in front of me.

I don't know about the more power & better milage thing, but yea it is cleaner burning. But it will drive up the cost of natural gas & since we heat our homes with it it will hurt us in the end. We need to find s different fuel.

It's cleaner burning and pretty fuel efficent, but its deffinatly less power. I have a relative that lives in LA. He owns a CNG Crown Vic so that he can use the carpool lane alone (he has money and does a lot of driving on the 405, what I woudl say is the worst freeway in the city). He says it has about the power and feel of a V6, even though it's a CNG-converted V8.

My company has a whole fleet of CNG vehicles, from Vans to pick up trucks.
The F150 pick ups can still lay down some rubber, but you refill he trucks every day or two. The gas mileage sucks compared to regular gas and diesel , but you lose the whole bed. The tanks hold more volume than the regular gas tank on the F150. There are two separate pumps, one for 3,000 PSI and one for 3,600 PSI. I'll take pics of the bed of an F150 tonight and you can see how large it is.

i don't think CNG is a good long term solution as there's not much CNG around compared to other fuels, but in limited use, it's not too bad. the problem with CNG is that you need large fuel tanks because it's not as energy dense as gasoline or diesel, so it's really only useful on busses or trucks, but the nature of CNG is that it's good for high horsepower, low torque situations. busses or trucks really should run on diesel which is better in a low horsepower, high torque application.
