Vehicle Natural Gas

For the first time, I saw a Vehicle Natural Gas pump at the gas station. What the heck is that for? I thought hybrids ran on regular gas. Sorry if this is a dumb question

When I was in San Francisco last week, I noticed alot of the airport shuttles run on natural gas. Anyone know why?

There's a lot of public transportation that runs on CNG. Maybe a political thing? I can see that it might be easier for a private business to buy the vehicles from the same suppliers of gov't vehicles.

EDIT:
maybe it's more cost effective or attracts more customers?

The CNG gives lower emissions, better mileage, more power, and it should be cheaper to buy.

id rather have H20 dripping out of the back than be choked by a fog of black smoke as the buss takes off in front of me.

I don't know about the more power & better milage thing, but yea it is cleaner burning. But it will drive up the cost of natural gas & since we heat our homes with it it will hurt us in the end. We need to find s different fuel.

It's cleaner burning and pretty fuel efficent, but its deffinatly less power. I have a relative that lives in LA. He owns a CNG Crown Vic so that he can use the carpool lane alone (he has money and does a lot of driving on the 405, what I woudl say is the worst freeway in the city). He says it has about the power and feel of a V6, even though it's a CNG-converted V8.

My company has a whole fleet of CNG vehicles, from Vans to pick up trucks.

The F150 pick ups can still lay down some rubber, but you refill he trucks every day or two. The gas mileage sucks compared to regular gas and diesel , but you lose the whole bed. The tanks hold more volume than the regular gas tank on the F150.
There are two separate pumps, one for 3,000 PSI and one for 3,600 PSI.

I'll take pics of the bed of an F150 tonight and you can see how large it is.

We have LNG plants, and a huge supply of it. But we don't even have any running this way yet.

We're still using coal, oil, and wood.

it's a mix of a lot of things: 1) politically it looks better, it a way to make the local government *look* like they're doing something about polution. 2) CNG can be cheaper if the distribution system is setup right. for a fleet where they only have one fueling point, it's easy to setup the fueling infrastructure. 3) burns much cleaner. especially in airports where your usually driving in underground garages and tunnels and such, you don't want diesel fumes building up there. 4) smog reduction, while CNG probably puts out the same amount of CO2 and other "greenhouse gasses" the combustion temps are lower than diesel so it makes less NOx which is believed to be responsible for smog.

i don't think CNG is a good long term solution as there's not much CNG around compared to other fuels, but in limited use, it's not too bad.

the problem with CNG is that you need large fuel tanks because it's not as energy dense as gasoline or diesel, so it's really only useful on busses or trucks, but the nature of CNG is that it's good for high horsepower, low torque situations. busses or trucks really should run on diesel which is better in a low horsepower, high torque application.

The gubment also offers tax incentives (due to lower emmisions) for companies that convert to CNG. UPS for a main example. Most our local public school district busses are now CNG as well.
