Tom and Jerry are out to get your KIDS!!!!!

to smoke

linkster

Now I don't smoke, nor do I even like to be around people that smoke, but tis a free country.

And to the article. What happened to parenting? This is a prime example of "it's not my fault" mentality. I remember both those Tom and Jerry cartoons and do I smoke, nope. Why? BECAUSE MY PARENTS TOLD ME NOT TO. From a young age at that. I understand that there are limits to what a parent can influence their child, however, I was faced with many choices growing up, I made some bad ones, and payed for it. However, I mostly made good choices and I have my parents to thank for that.

If a person does not want their kid to smoke, or drink, or do whatever, then they need to instill it into them as a child, but not to be a half-ass parent and then when their kid is smoking, drinking and having sex at 16 years old flip out and make it seem like it's the video games, the movies, the television shows and commercials fault.

I will bet you that if you polled EVERYONE who smokes, there might be a very small few,if any at all, who said that it was Tom and Jerry that caused them to start smoking.

And that ladies and gents. is my 2 cents for the day. Now excuse me while I go and

Congrats of quitting man!

Honestly, I really think it comes down to parenting. Do the cartoons have an effect? Maybe, but to keep kids from smoking, it has to be instilled in them as a young child, and even then, it doesn't always work. This is just the same as the Fast n' Furious movies making kids want to drive like idiots. I'm sure there was some influence there, but a good parent teaches their kids to use judgement to their advantage and prevent from doing such dangerous things.

I remember camel joe as a kid, heck, i remember the COMMERCIALS on TV. None of which made me want to smoke. I was offered several times in HS (see: peer pressure) but i didn't give into it.

What it comes down to for me is censorship (I know that seems like a lot coming from me for some of you ) but if we really want to further our society, we have to take responcibility for our actions. If your child starts smoking at 12 years old, can you really blame the TV? I don't think so, and if a parent is afraid of their kid taking up such habits due to TV alone, then they have the right to censor the TV themselves. The gov. doesn't need to do that for us.

The more and more I read about what's going on in DC the more I'm getting sick of politics. There are so many issues right now (Iraq, Iran, global warming, Israel, the people in our own nation praising Hezbollah, and on and on) but it has come down to bickering between parties and nothing is getting done. And I'm feeling that more and more people I know are starting to fall into that trap. I could go on and on, but I'd rather not because it's just going to get my blood pressure higher.

i think society hit its peak in the 70s or 80s. after that, we've run out of real problems so we have to look like we're doing something by making everything child proof and glossed over. in the process, there is no longer much accountability for anything.

Every one of my family and friends (except one) smoked. At age 12 I thought I should try, but got so sick I never wanted to again. I'm now 50 and haven't smoked since. Yech.

Parenting plays a part, but peer pressure can do a number on many kids. Personally, I've never tried it, had too many trips in the car with grandma and grandpa smoking like chimneys in the front and the 3 of us girls with our shirts up over our noses in the back. Ugh! My sisters both smoked for a time starting in high school while hanging out with the smoking crowd and both quit a little after. My parents were both non-smokers and were very strong in that message. Maybe their message won out in the end? Both sisters are now very anti-smoking.

Tom and Jerry? Hahahahahahahah! Compared to a ton of the shows we watched back in the 70's they were a drop in the ocean smoking-wise. Senselessly violent, that's what I remember thinking of them back then. Didn't really watch them much because of that. I was more a Batman/Superman/Lone Ranger sort. And the Road Runner, of course (hey, the coyote deserved it).

Both my grandparents are gone now, both from cancer. One went within a year but the other battled for the last 20 years of his life....incredibly sick nearly the entire time.

Yeah, smoking, you can keep it.

My dad was a longtime smoker but my mom wasn't and I tried a few ciggies back in school to see if I was cooler but I was so cool I just never wnet with the habit.

Seriously,it just seemed like a waste of $$$ and not to mention your health.

Just to make sure you understand me, I'm not condoning somking in any way, shape, or form. I'm simply bringing to light what certain people are doing and how dumb it is. Instead of taking personal responcibility people try to find the blame in things that simply are not at fault.

And yes, peer pressure can have a big impact on children. However, if a child is rasied right, with a close relationship to his/her parents, the chances of giving into peer pressure go down. A child has to be given independance and given the gift of individualism. When a kid knows that they are an independant person, then they are less likely to feel the need to "fit in" by doing things that they know they shouldn't.

:bigclap: agreed. however this is the scary fence we walk as parents. I am a big believer it giving children a sense of independence, and letting experience be the best teacher. But I am also often conflicted by those feelings of protection and I struggle with this issue (I don't want to be the overbearing father, nor do I want their mother to shelter them) and I know it will continue to grow. Parenting is an art and a skill and I commend the good ones.

Here's where the term "independance" gets tricky.

I think there's difference between the parent giving their kid "independance" and teaching them independance. Giving a kid independance will allow them to stay out late, do this do that. Teaching them independance, from a young age, will instill in their minds that it's just fine to not follow the crowd. My parents didn't give me complete independance, but they did teach me it.

Any parent can say, "sure go camping in the woods with 10 people I don't know"

But a good parent says, "Don't let anybody but yourself make up your mind."

I think it's hard to explain how I feel about it, I think the best way to describe it is instead of giving your child independance, be a parent, but teach them that they are the ones who need to make up their minds about many things and only use what you have taught them to make better decisions.

As my father told, and still tells me, "All I want for you is to do better than I" And that's not just by the standards of where he is in his career, marriage, or toys, but on my own level.
