This sucks...

So what vacuum do YOU use?

The house I'm in right now is primarily hard wood floors so I have gotten away with a crappy vaccum. At the end of the month I'm moving into an apartment that is all carpet except the kitchen and bathrooms. I have a German Shepheard so I'm gonna need something with some good suction. What do you all recomend? So far I like this one best.

Overall Good value (from what Ive found...)
Eureka Whilwind

Cool, good rating, not sure if its worth the extra coin...
Bosch

I know I want bagless, thats about it as far as features... I really like the oreck xl, thats what we have at work, but they are like $300.

You'll also want a carpet cleaner w/ an indoor pet. get a cheaper vac and drop about two bills on a decent shampooer and you'll be happy.

I just went with whatever consumer reports said was good. It's a eureka.

Speaking of vacuum cleaners, anybody see the new mega machines on discovery channel? There's a guy who has a huge vacuum cleaner truck and people pay him to go around sucking prarie dogs from their holes. It's pretty funny.

Damn, those dysons are sweet... but... $500 for a vacuum is a little crazy for a college student. Maybe if I was martha stewart... or if I was married and I was in the dog house... but... na... They do seem to have one hell of a package. That small one is sweet! Espcially for small spaces!

Check ebay!!! We got our Dyson Animal vac for $400 including shipping. Brand new full warranty.
ebay Dyson Animal search

Put our expensive Hoover to shame. Our Hoover would take about 3 weeks to fill a bag with Dog hair. The Dyson picks up that much before we get halfway finished with the house. Totally amazing and fairly quiet.

If you're planning on staying in the house, get a central vac. It's the only way to go.

We had a Kriby for 28 years before it finally went kaput. My mom was quite sad, but we then bought a Bissel for $117 or so from Target. It is bagless, and cleans up the house VERY well. Even with 3 dogs and 4 cats, our carpets are virtually hair free after a quick run with it. It has helped out a lot with alergies. I suggest it if I were you.

Dyson is a very good vacuum cleaner if you can afford it. I have Sears model and it's the best vacuum we have ever had.

Yeah, cheap they aren't.. But I sold a bunch of crap on ebay and the amount in PayPal will cover a Dyson on ebay... so...its like I just traded useless stuff for a good vacume, so my wife can clean...not me :-)

We'll see, our house is only 1450 sqft...so I probally dont need a 450 vacume, but it would really suck

Heh, it figures everyone here would be attracted by the latest tech, except Kyle who still uses a broom.

The Dyson DC-14 Animal is da bomb. I had new carpets installed and then professionally cleaned to get the lint and whatnot out. The cleaner guy showed up with an enormous Nissan 4 cyl. he uses for commercial apps. It steamed and sucked like a fat chick on a hot desert night. Sorry, can't stop thinking about the "Size 18" thread.

Anyway, after a couple days of drying, I went over the newly cleaned carpet with the new DC-14 and pulled about 7-8 canisters full of lint out the commercial rig steamer missed.

Since then, it's performed flawlessly. The HEPA filter is a blessing for my dog with his severe allergies. Plus, it doesn't smell like dog when I'm done due to the double filtration system.

Attachments are a little quirky, so watch the Flash demo at their site.

You can get them at Bed, Bath & Beyond for 20% off with one of their mailers that show up regularly. Save even more and get the DC-14 All Floors that's exactly the same guts as the Animal but with fewer accessories. All the attachments can be bought separately, though. I got the low rider thing for getting underneath beds.

Avoid the DC-15 Ball. I tried one of those for a week then returned it for the more powerful DC-14.

Never thought I'd write this much about a vacuum cleaner...

The apartment around there must be a little different then Des Moines. Every apartment I looked at only allows small dogs or cats.

If you are on a budget forget the high dollar vacumes. Go with a shop vac.

Hoover windtunnel. Have 3 shedding dogs and the vacuum picks up all the hair. I have had it for 3 years now and other than belts, never had a problem.

Oreck XL. I absolutley love that thing. We have the oreck air purifiers too, and I also like them. If you go with the oreck you get like 8 years of free tune up services, and a little small vac. for free. I can't believe no one's mentioned it yet.
