Spun into a new dimension of PISSED OFF....*EDITED*

ok..so i am riding along like i normally do down to the York Street Treat for a nice tall cone if ice-cream. when all of the sudden i hit a bump on my GT i-drive 2.0 and i hear the tell-tale CRACK!!!!

i wasn't jumping, ramping etc. i was riding like normal in saddle and hit a 1 inch bump. i am soooo mad....

here is the carnage.....

buckled in the back....

i found the problem.....

and this all happend when i just got the Marzocchi Z1 freeride on her.....

I too have an idrive. Never had any problems, but i would call right away, That is some bull if a trail bike, built for jumping and beating on, does that on a one inch bump.

I think you need to plate both sides, sleeve it, add some Grade 10.9 bolting and use a gusset or two.

I'm still not sure exactly what was broken...but that sucks.

in this one the yellow circles show where the aluminum had buckled on the backside of the seatpost holder thingy

this yellow circle shows where the aluminum cracked(not even at a seam!!!) allowing the seatpost holder thingy to buckle....

The hubby's Ellsworth Truth has broken 3 times....last time he was meandering on a flat smooth stretch of singletrack when the top tube broke near the steer tube. Thank goodness there and not while rocketing downhill in Silverton like he'd been a couple days before that.

JRA-just riding around. Guaranteed eyeball roller at the LBS.

Sorry to break it to ya but it wasn't the fault of the bike. You didn't have the seatpost in far enough. You MUST have the seatpost down to at least mid way though top tube for the frame to have the indegrity it was designed to have. That's what that cutout in the seat tube is, a window to see how far down the post is. It's suposed to be in bast the bottom of the window. You will probably still get it replaced but just keep that in mind for future refrence. No way it would have broken with proper insurtion. I have been a a bike mechanic for 9 years so I have seen it all.

Wow, I almost bought one of those but just stuck to my Kona for now.

As I stated in my post, this incodent was not a flaw in the frame. GT makes some great bikes. Any frame will break without enough seatposte insert, especially a mountina bike since the post is out so far it has a lot of levage on the collar.

for the record those "I" drives have always been prone to cracking and failing like that since they first came out. some are lucky but it does have a high failure rate. (started about the time GT sold out). Take it to your local GT dealer and get another, ride, break, repeat.

I think he was talking about the Ellsworth. Nice when it works. Ellsworth has warranteed it all three times though that last one he had to buy the rear triangle because of a design change. Since the other two failures were there we're hoping they've managed to solve the problem.

I cracked the head tube on my Jamis, and they sent me a team replacement that is not for retail sale. I still bought a cove. Good ol bikes built in Canada, they dont break as much. Hopefully they get you your new frame quickly. Nothing worse than being between bikes.

Ah. Yea, there are a lot of bikes out there that will break if you ride them long and hard. It takes an agressive rider to find the weaknesses. Sounds like that was the case there.

I have a Giant ACiD. To those in the know, it was a frame giant tried to market as a freeride frame back when the whole "freeride" thing took off. The only problem was it was not meant for that sort of thing. It is a great frame for smaller travel applications like urban/street or dj, but once i threw on a z150, i basically signed it's death certificate. The head tube weld cracked. I ended up getting a warranty frame, the STP 1, with no problems whatsoever. It looks beefier, but I've learned my lesson. Now the front end has all of 100mm of travel with the new Manitou Gold Label fork. It is my urban machine.

By window I assume you are refering to something on the back side of the what is the seat tube. The keyhole slot on the front is there to tighten the seat post not to view how far the post is in. Many of the frames like that actually want the seat post to go all the way to the bottom of the of the seat tube. Also check to see if your post is above the minium insertion line. As stated above, this is most likley not the fault of the frame.

My advise to you would be to remove the post before you take the frame in to the shop. You may also want to clean out the seat tube. Most likley you will get a new frame with out trouble.

B.
