SATA hard drive question
Member Drew can't get online as his computer is down as he is putting in two Seagate 120 or 160 GB SATA hard drives.
They are both the new SATA ones, and he has them setup in the BIOS, and his main IDE hard drive is no longer in the case. The problem is that XP Pro loads the installation setup screen, but it says it can't find his hard drives. Anyone know how to get it going for him so I can call him back with the info? Thanks,

The Windows setup won't be able to see the SATA drives unless you go into the BIOS and set the drives to appear to be on the IDE channel. On one computer I set up, the option in the BIOS allowed me to set the SATA channel as Primary IDE. It doesn't affect anything performance wise, it just allows Windows to recognize the drive.

He most likely will need to provide drivers for the SATA Hardware so that they can be accessed during setup. He will need the drivers on a floppy disk. Tell him to press F6 when it says to press F6 while XP Setup is loading. This will happen right after he presses a key to boot from the XP CD. Once setup loads, he will be prompted to load drivers for a non-supported RAID or IDE or SCSI device contoller.
Hope this helps. G |

There were some performance enhancements added to SP1, one of which was to address hard disk performance. The extra nosie is most likely due to the hard drives reading and writing faster, which is a good thing. You can slso check to see if there was an updated driver for your SATA controller added to SP1, or from Windows Update itself. A new driver can also change hard disk performance and it might be the cause for the extra noise.
Hope this helps. G |
