Safety glasses don't work!

Here's a rant for you. When I was at school for automotive technology, the instructors harped on us majorly to wear safety glasses. I understand why both for insurance reasons and our safety. Well 6 months ago I was doing some work on a customer's vehicle and got a piece of steel in my right eye and I was NOT wearing safety glasses which was my own stupidity. Had the metal removed and rust treated fine. Yesterday I was grinding some rust off a customer's brake rotor hub and WAS wearing my safety glasses. Well I now have 2 pieces of metal in my left eye. In a few minutes I am going to have the metals removed and the rust treated. My point here is.... wear a space helmet at all times! Just kidding, don't wear safety glasses when doing metal work, goggles are better since they have protection all around the eyes. Another lesson learned the hard way....

You might try the full face shield instead......yeah the simple safety glasses just suck!

More one like this:

Proper way is safety glass with the face shield, at least, that's what all the big oil field equipment companies I've worked for teach in the OSHA safety classes, which I have to do almost every 2 years.

This may be a bit overboard, but you could also wear a sandblasting hood.

Hey I might want to give that one to a co-worker of mine. He ain't exactly good lookin' Thanks for the suggestion guys. I just finished up at the eye doctor and went to Lowe's to get a pair of goggles. I don't need anything fancy, just something to cover my whole eyes. Knowing my luck though, a peice of metal will just wait until I take the goggles off and crawl up in my eyes.

.....the hood gave me a good laugh.

I use the face shield because I sweat like crazy and the goggles fog up on me but the shield won't (as badly anyway).

:pat: Dang I forgot about the goggles fogging up on me. As hot and humid my shop is, I know they are just gonna fog up like crazy. I saw one that had like a knob to turn the shield for painters, a bit overboard but oh well. I guess I can be the first to do a breather mod for my goggles though he he.

wearing just plain old safety glasses is a lot safer than wearing nothing at all, or at least that is the theory, yes i too have personally gotten crap in my eyes in both situations, but safety glasses work to keep crap from falling on you when under a car, dirt and stuff..... also safety glasses guard against flying wheel weights thrown by coworkers.....

i wear lo-profile safety glasses(got them because they fit under my welding hood really well) and they work great. they kind of suck into your eye sockets(well, in a way) and keep junk out of your eyes a lot better than the square style ones

I don't think I've seen those. Are you talking about the one where the ends go around your cheeks?

I have a pair that look like sunglass/goggles....They were expensive but have a tight seal around my eyes...I could dunk my head under water and it would probably take them a minute to fill up. So I dont need to worry about chemicals splashing into my eyes or anything else....You might want to check something like that out. They look pretty cool too, not something you'd wear to a party but have an interesting look to them.....

Yes, you have to match your eye protection to the job you are doing. I wear safety glasses at work. I was transferring 1.1.1trichloroethane (brake clean) from a bulk tank to a sprayer, so I also put on a face shield. I had some (OK, a lot) of sprayback that covered my head. The chemicals then ran down my extensive forehead and into my eyes. I had "double protection", but it was the wrong kind for the job....I needed the tight goggles.
Did I say it burned like hell!!!! I was in ER for several hours getting the eyes flushed out.
Check this site for a large variety of eyewear:
http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/safetyglasses1.html

Some look pretty cool.

About 16 years ago we were cutting cast iron pipe in a house. I KNEW I was going to be working under, around over and with a Sawz-All on this project. Safety kicked in on this one.

Time for Safety Glass, Safety Goggles, AND a full face shield. Should have been good right?

3 days later I was in the ER because I couldn't even open my eye and when they got into see what was going on, it was infected.

I got a piece of Cast iron cutting into my eye.

Near as we could figure it out. I had some kind of cuttings on my hands and when I went to wipe my eye or something, that is when it got into my eye.

Wash your hands too BEFORE you touch your eyes.

I have 2 nice pairs of Uvex glasses lying around.

I don't wear sunglasses much, but most of my friends who do like them and want a pair.

I looked on their website, and cannot find them. I do not have the box or bag they came in anymore.

They look better than most of the sunglasses from major companies like Oakley, Rudy Project, Von Zipper, Spy.
