I used to climb at a high level back in the early 80s. That was when there was but a single climb rated above 5.12 in the entire country, a huge overhang out in Yosemite that was put up by the guy who invented Friends. I'm not sure where ratings have gone since-- although I did read how Tommy Caldwell recently freed a sustained series of 5.14c pitches on El Cap. I think today's climbers are far more technically proficient but somehow less adventurous than our forefathers. Equipment is *so* much better (and safer) than it was when Chouinard and Robbins and Frost and Harding et al were putting up first ascents in the 50s and 60s. I did one 5.11 in my lifetime, but the scariest lead I ever did was on Wolf's Head in the Cirque of the Towers in WY. The pitch was only a 5.6, but it was all air for 2000 ft. under my toes. That was the best I had ever climbed and the most I had ever tested my nerve. Now, when my wife lets me, I ice climb in the Dacks once a year. It's easier since you create your own hand and footholds as you go. Looks like you guys in IN are doing the sport proud. Thanks for sharing the pictures and rekindling some memories. H.

you have a lead climber that goes "above the rope" meaning, if he falls, he falls the furthest! lead climber ties the rope to his harness with a figure 8 knot, and the person on the ground, belayer, it in control of the speed of the rope. in sport climbing there are anchors in the rock wall and the lead climber climbs up to the anchors (5-12 sometimes depending on the hieght of the climb) and connects a carabener (sp) to the rope and to the anchor, and then up to the next and next and next until he gets to the top, where he unties himself from his harness, the runs the rope thru the top chain, and then ties the rope back to his harness, then you belay him down and on the way down he undoes the carabeners. so when hes on the ground, the ropes on the top, and now its just climbing back to the top. thats it in a nutshell.

Is it an xterra commercial where they're rockin' out to find the level 5 whitewater, see it, and say "hey...a level 2 and a level 3 equal a level 5, right?"

if it wasnt for my fear of heights, lack of athleticism, allergies, fear of death, lack of trust for putting my life in someones hands, and general dislike for outdoor activities, I would love to try it out....

go to an indoor rock gym, and learn there! then when you feel decent, go outdoors with people who know what they are doing. Personally I like to boulder better than sport climb, and bouldering in the gym is super fun! |

my climbing partner is prolly one of the best partners i can have. he's been climbing for 10 years and is certified in rock climbing and mountain rescue. i don't like indoor climbing, the view from the top ain't worth the climb. climbing 100 feet and looking out over a national forest, thats cool. sometimes you have to conquer your fears, and sometimes your fears make you conquer your goals.
opps, saw you quoting someone and saw scared of heights and thought it was me u were quoting

its ok, I don't really like toproping in the gym, but I love to boulder. Especially since my gym threw up an actual boulder, has a cave just for bouldering, and 2 walls at 45* just for bouldering.
Leading there is fun though since our lead wall starts at 45* and your first 2 clips are at 50*, then it evens out. so leading is difficult. |
