Repoing cars?

I know there is a topic of the same nature down below. I didnt want to hijack his thread. My brother in law, who has numerous "run-ins" with the law wants to get in the business of reposssesing cars. How does one start by getting into this profession?

He asked me and I hadnt a clue. I told him I buy them, not steal them!

I think most of them start by working for a used car dealer. Most of the bigger lots have a repo dude on staff.

contact your local DMV or licening department .. you have to get a icense for it first, have a registered business, etc then work for a F.I., dealer, etc... or he can just work for an established repo organization, in which case crack open the yellow pages

Find a repo man and ask to do ride alongs. A coworker of mine tried it out for the weekend, but opted not to change careers.

How did he meet the repo man? Talking in a steam room (insert joke here).

You may need to work through a car lot or financial institution if the phone book doesn't work.

Should watching the movie "Repo Man" be a prerequisite? Just a thought.

Contact your financial institution and find out who their collection company is on autos, boats, etc. Or, look up "recovery services" in the phone book. A lot of repo companies list their name and phone but no address. Call them up and tell them you're interested in getting into the business. Find out if they'll let you do a ride along. I know our recovery company won't let anyone ride along unless you are going to be employed with them. Too much liability.

Why become a repo man? It's a rush. You have to be a night person. Most recoveries are performed at night. And you have to have an aggressive personality. In other words, if someone comes out will you're in the middle of a hook, you have to be on the spot and ready for a confrontation.

You also must abide by the repo code

"I shall not cause harm to any vehicle nor the personal contents thereof, nor through inaction let that vehicle or the personal contents thereof come to harm."
