Thanks, Death. Haha, yeah the tigercat is awesome! I believe there are 4 in existence. 3 of them were at the races this year. 2 static displays and one being raced!

Awesome pictures. I was there in 2002 and can't wait to go back again. There is nothing like the sound of the Unlimited class.

I learned this little tidbit while walking the hangars:
Did you know that in the homebuilt class (and maybe others) there is a steel cable that is bolted from the engine to the airframe? It is required - in the event of catastrophic engine failure, which could potentially rip the engine from the aircraft - the engine will be tethered to the airframe, to retain its "center of gravity", and "possibly" allow the aircraft to land. Think about that for a minute.

I get to watch them every year from my back yard across the valley. My grandparents also live a few blocks from where the Great Reno Balloon Races are held.

Thank you both for the compliments.

Jon, I did not know that. Some of those home-built (sport class) planes are going over 400 miles per hour now. During qualifying, "Nemesis" put up a lap average of 409.297 miles per hour!

Wow, averaging almost 410.

Any wrecks this year? There were 3 planes down and 2 fatalities when I was there.

One other cool thing I recall seeing was a homebuilt that had a supercharger. Only the supercharger wasn't on the main engine... it had a separate engine behind the pilot that basically forced air into the main engine's intake. So the pilot basically has a wound out briggs & stratton on his back along with separate fuel for it. Nutz.

That's pretty crazy. Yeah, those guys do some incredible mods to those engines. The commentator at the races said that some of the Merlin V-12s in the Mustangs are running 155 lbs of boost! He described the cylinder as a "metal balloon."

Thankfully, there were no crashes during the event. Rare Bear had a couple of close calls, though. Two of his races ended in maydays. I caught both with my camera.

His first mayday was a stuck right landing landing gear. If you look closely at this pic, you can see the gear door stuck open a little bit. He was just about to land it on its belly, when he finally got the wheel to drop by applying some high-G turns.

Then he blew his engine during the Gold race. This resulted in a very quick and scary lookin' emergency landing. Imagine if both malfunctions had occurred at the same time..

Thanks, man. Air shows are a ton of fun. I'm going to try to make it to a few others before the next Reno races.
