Reminder, Yall

Check your mods to make sure they're working like you intended - even the simplest ones.

Case in point: I upgraded my spare tire to a 33" to fit my others a couple months ago. Today I was washing the truck and noticed I didn't have a spare anymore - the factory cable that holds it up under the truck has broken. Guess it wasn't rated to carry that much extra weight.

Hope it fell off safely and didn't cause a wreck...

people have been stealing spare tires for a long time... especially if they are nice ones.. thats why a lot of manufacturers that have full size spares with the alloy rims keep them inside the vehicle....

The 95's have a chain hoist not a cable and the chain is well tucked up behind the tire out of reach. So they probally didnt cut the chain that was tucked away. I vote that the installer didnt center the hoist cradle part in the wheel and one good bump made it go buhbye. Its actually kinda funny, your story and all.

At least you won't get high centered on your spare like I did. The rocks I crushed the side of my bumper on were about a foot higher than my spare.

Actually my '95 had a cable. Earlier ones had a chain...maybe 95's with 31" tires from the factory had chains as well...

The installer was me.

And the 33" was a tight fit up under there... I had to bend a couple of the centering tabs away. No, I had it in there tight with the hoist on the rim correctly.

I haven't tried to spool any more cable out but I'm betting that it unwound a bit, hit the bottm a few times, and started the tire spinning...wound up so tight it tore the cable..

I'm planning on going for a homemade roof mount next.

Well then, they should have gotten the HiLift jack, fire extinguisher, and SuperTrapp. That would have increased their profits by about 80% in another 45 seconds.

Ahhh the late 95 aka 95.5 right? Did you go from the factory alloy to steel rims? Just making my usual assumption I hope I didnt offend you to bad. The roof is a good way to go being I did that but it really does make the rig top heavy especially on off camber situations. But to each his own on that one being I heard the warnings ahead of doing that but still did it. What I did was buy a tail gate tire carrier and tail gate. I stripped the inside framing that the carrier mounts to and fabbed up my non carrier style gate to hold the carrier and it has been tested tough with zero problems. Good luck in whatever you do. Spare tires suck when it comes down to having to find a home for them especially big ones like ours. But we gotta have em. Ben

Yup, I don't know if mine's 95.5 or not...actually I don't think it is, I saw one of those today and it looked slightly different than mine. Mine had head gasket problems so it might as well have been a 94 for all I care, haha.

I still have the aluminum rims... I wanna get black ones sometime but not now.

I don't have too much $$ to play with now (getting married the 22nd), so I have to do the cheapest thing: go on top. That extra weight way up there will be topsy, no doubt...I may throw the tire inside when I wheel. In the end, I'll get a nice rear bumper with swing out rear carrier. But that's for later.

Sucks about the spare...I cant stop smiling though I have this mental picture of a tire bouncing its way down the road passing cars. Hopefully it didnt cause to much trouble.

So how much money are you out with the loss of the tire and rim?

I'm not really whining about the money I'm out - maybe I should be but stuff happens and you learn a lesson.
The tire actually came to $150, had included warranty, free liftime ballance & rotate (ha, for a spare?) and all that crap. I was a little surprised at that price because they didn't seem that expensive when I bought the four on the ground but oh well.
Plus whatever a stock spare rim costs....I need to look for one today, and a cheaper place to get 33x10.5 TAKOs. For now though, I'll just use the 31" that I had taken off, until after the wedding and the wife says I can spend money.
