Proposed "Trail citizen" contest

Proposed "Trail Citizen" contest

Folks, I've been seeing several threads flying by concerning raising awareness of both the political aspects of off-roading and the pubic perception of 4 wheelers in general.

See the following threads for more info if you've been ignoring them:

http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=37931

http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=37881

http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=37879

Sort of related:

http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=38004

I got into my head the idea to have a bit of a contest here on Yotatech to get people more involved. Something like this: We set a time limit, either 30, 45, or 90 days, where everyone has a chance to commit "random acts of kindness" for the off-roading community. Each activity gets you a certain number of points. At the end of it, we add up your points, and the winner gets a prize.

Now since there are difficulties involved in holding anything like this where the prizes are actually worth anything, I'll offer to pony up the first round of prizes. I have a set of barely used Sonoron Steel Shackle Hangers (originally $125, resold to me at $65, and therefore if I pass them on now, by simple interpolation, they are free, and therefor have no cash value). Alternately, if you can't use these, I'll buy any three items from the Yotatech Cafepress store in your size, and since they won't fit me, I'll just give them to you instead.

Suggested activities and points might be something like:

Go on a trail cleanup - 25 points

Organize a trail cleanup - 75 points

Write a letter to gov't agency - 15 points

Plagiarize someone elses letter - 5 for you, 5 for the author

Join an organization that is active in promoting responsible wheeling, such as the blue ribbon coalition - 20 points

Attend and report on a planning meeting (BLM, FS, etc) - 25 points

Others?

To claim your points, you'll need to post what you did, the text of your letter, or similiar "proof". (Really just to give other people good ideas!)

Whaddya think? Am I just dreaming here, or does this sound interesting? Regardless of who wins, we all win!

I think that is a capital idea! I am in favor of almost ANYTHING that gets people up off their apathetic butts to do something about keeping trails open. If it takes a bribe in the form of a contest to make it happen, then I am cool with that. It's all about getting people in the habit of taking an active role in trail preservation.

that sounds like a great idea, i was kinda thinking about maybe seeing if we could orginize group outtings that involved hitting local trails, but also doing trail cleanups at the same time. not quite sure how we would do it, but for example, i know washington is kinda split up, and we have a number of people from washington, so say, all the western washington guys organize a trip to a trail close to them, and the eastern wa. guys do the same for they're side of the state.

otay... sounds like this was a non-starter idea! But I've had em before, and I'll have em again.

(btw, going on a trail ride and having the trail not be at least a little cleaner than when you started, -100 points! )

Keep the faith, and do what y'all can to practice and disseminate good trail ethics... catch ya all later.

Rock On! I have already posted on my clubs website setting up a trail clean up. I have 1 member besides myself. LoL But its a start. My proof will lay within digital photos. i will photogragh all of my hopefully more than 2 person clean up crew. We will log our time as spoken about in one of the named threads. The bump we are running into this trail cleanup is what to do with all of the trash we bring down off the trails. there is alot on this specific trail. Were talking chairs, couches, and you name it. Im thinking of going over to HorseLake where were not allowed simply to recover a black pontiac transam sitting in a ravine/ditch. Been there years and I think I have a shot at recovering it to set on the side of the road. I will then call a towing company and scram prior to him getting there. Can I ask the BLM to pay the bill for the trash my club takes off of Burch Mountain? I have no money and until I can figure out what to do with hte trash I plan on atleast getting it to the base and starting a pile. I guess I could pile it up and speak to the county's fire crew and tell them its a fire hazard. Maybe then they would send up a crew of county road crew workers or inmates from the local jail to clear it out. ideas?

sounds like fun! good thing u didnt ask me or i might have broken something or been made fun of for taking it light as too not break anything! hahaa. we'll see about the little naches run down the road. i've got a buddy leaving for Europe for a few months, and we're planning on climbing up mount adams late august as well. the flooding idea sounds a little safer for me, i break something, i'm just a 15 min. tow from home!
