Police Scanners
Anyone own a police scanner? I just picked up a Uniden Bearcat 245XLT from a friend since he's going out of town for a bit. You can hear some crazy stuff on this thing!

What a trip, isn't it?
I think one of the first things that really opened my eyes (while I was still a sheltered college student) was exactly how many crazy... sorry, mentally unbalanced, individuals are out roaming around out there! |

Fun huh? They also have live broadcasts via the internet for most of the major departments.

They are legal to own, however I believe some states do not allow them in auto's. I work as a career firefighter/paramedic and there is plenty to listen to, especially where I work. (Baltimore/Washington metro area).
Plenty of crazies out there, listening to the calls is just a 1/4 of the fun, actually seeing the conditions people live in is amazing! ---I drink alot LOLwww.incidentbroadcast.com has some live areas including the Baltimore area. www.incidentbroadcast.com:8767 this is the port you use after downloading teamspeak (small file) Hope this helps.

police scanners are a guarenteed good time... we used to use them when we would terrorize the girls soccer games back in highschool with a waterballoon slingshot to find out where the cops where at all times(small town)... and also when we would have parties, we could have up to 5 minute warning of the cops showing up, even a one minute advance meant the difference between caught and free...
they are amazing

I thought most police and highway patrol were on a trunking system that is virtually unmonitorable... Is this not the case?

They make scanners that do follow the trunk system (the one above is one of them....I have one too)
I know when there is an accident up ahead of me. I know what lanes are blocked I knew when my mother-in-law's neighbor died I know when the fire dept is coming my way I know when there is a high speed pursuit (and what lane the spike strips are in)

True, you will find alot of agencies going to the digital format on a trunking system which makes alot of jurisdictions hard to listen to, unless you have a $500.00 scanner.
Alot of jurisdictions also simulcast their dispatch over conventional systems, which makes it easy to listen to on a conventional less expensive scanner. I too have one in both of my trucks...its good to know accidents ahead while traveling, etc. My wife hates it, unless something interesting comes over or it helps us get out of traffic, then she loves it....WOMEN!

I've never heard of these, they sound pretty helpful and fun. How much does one of these cost and where could I pick one up?

I originally bought a scanner to listen to train activity, but I've found that Police, Sherrif and Medics are fun to listen to while driving around.

Ebay might also be a good place to check out. As for cost? Can have a pretty moderate to hefty pricetag. |
