Police Scanners

Does anyone here use a scanner? I was wanting to buy one in the next week or so and was curious of any opinions on particular brands. I was probably gonna pick one up at radio shack unless someone has any advice to point me another direction. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Jeff

You should find out what kind of system the departments in your area use so you can narrow your search.

For example, the Chesapeake Police just went to an all digital system, so I can't pick them up anymore.

It's funny, I have never really considered one before but I was at Radioshack picking up some supplies last week and they had one out on the counter picking up some police talk. They aren't terribly expensive so I'm actually thinking about picking on up as well. Just something fun to play around with ya know... let us know what you end up with and how you like it!

I had a thread going about scanners a while back, I'll look for it and post it. I still haven't picked one up but I'd like to get one.

My parents used to have a Uniden that worked well. As with any electronics you get what you pay for.

I have a scanner

I have a Radio Shack 150 channel scanner I picked up for $99. It sold for around $130 before but was an old model from a prior year so they sold it for cheap and still gave me the 2 year warranty. I only have my local city PD on it but it works like a charm. Its nice to hear whats going on esp. when your pulled over and wanna know what they say bout yuh. I keep mine clipped on my pass. side visor. get one man there cool!

There's a downside to having on in a small town if your a teenager. My mom would know if one of our parties was getting busted like at real time it sucked. I was in trouble before the cops even got there most of the time. My mom was cool though. One time she came ripping up the road out in the boonies and said you all better split the cops are coming. She actually beat them there because they were looking for us and she knew where we usually went. Also the one and only time I got pulled over in highschool she was standing in the driveway waiting for me to get home..haha

I have a Radio Shack 10 Channel that I have had for 12 years. I still plug Marine frequecies in it when I am out on the water and I plug the logging company frequencies in when I am 4x4ing.

Most of the local police departments have changed over to digital encrypted radios and the Military Police and Fire have changed over to a crest system so I can't get them at work on my $1800 issued radio anymore

Thanks for the info guys. And UK, unfortunatly, I'm not a teen anymore , so no trouble from the parents...It looks like I'm gonna pickup a Pro 95 1000-channel dual-trunking handheld. I'm not sure if I'm gonna do the ebay thing or just get a new one. Knowing me and my impulse shopping habits I'll prolly get a new one. I only have to convince my wife how much this is needed.

I've got a question.

What does the "trunking" mean?

Thanks

A trunking system is one that constantly switches frequencies...

Conventional scanners can still pick up trunking systems, but there may be gaps in the messages. Scanners equipped to listen to trunking chatter will follow the switching.

I ended up getting the radio shack pro 94. The only difference between the 95 and the 94 that I could tell is the PC interface. I think I can figure how to program it myself. Although, it would have been nice to just upload my local frequencys and not read the instructions. I've only played with it for one night but for 169.99 i was entertained plenty. I guess I'm gonna have to start geekin on a scanner board also.

BUMP --- Uniden BC898T

I received a radio scanner, Uniden BC898T for xmas.

All the specs can be found here click me

It's far more sensitive than either my old BC895XLT, BC100XLT and BC200XLT.
That's great because living in hillsboro, oregon, I can here Clark County, Washington action, plus Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington.

Some truely neat features are; the ability to listen to CB radio channels, trunked 400/800/900 mhz radio systems and a computer interface to manage and control the scanner.

I decided to buy a Radio Shack Pro-2044 to listent to airports and state police.

I suggest older Radio Shack models pro-2004/2006 if you want something durable and easly modified. Any police scanner after 1997 has been hardened to prevent modifications per FCC demands.

Here's a short list of web sites if you are interested in listening to police scanners.

http://www.radioreference.com
http://www.joescanner.com
http://www.eham.net
http://www.strongsignals.com

Update:

I failed to mention about books. Northwest Frequency Directory from www.scannerstuff.com is a great book. It explains trunking, radio jargon and some of the technology used.

The radio shack book Police Call is inaccurate. Police Call has two redeeming features. First, the software is written for radio shack scanners like Pro-2052 that have a computer interface. Second, the search frequency database (written in foxpro argh!) that helps isolate frequencies in you local area.

My husband was wanting one of the table top style models. We had a hand held before and we had fun with it but never did program it or find the frequencies that we really wanted. We heard some chatter but not as much as we wanted. Is there really a difference between hand held and table top models?

I saw the old handheld in Crash's shop yesterday. I have a handheld Uniden trunk-tracker. I programmed in the sheriff, WSP, fire and rescue, search and rescue, lifeflight helocopter. Kinda nice last week, cause I knew ahead of time the Preston dip on I-90 was iced up and had accidents. Slowed WAY down.

This is the local board with frequency listings

If you belong to a volunteer fire department a hand-held police scanner comes in very handy. Most 911 dispatches are going to a digital system. My recommendation to anyone wanting to buy a scanner is to get a scanner that can desypher digital frequencies.
