PDA recommendations

Man, its wierd...I actually have to WORK at work now. Maybe I should have stayed out west, where I could surf all day long.

My newfound business has me thinking that I could really benefit from a PDA of some sort. I've never had one so I'm not sure what I should look for. I'd like to explore both the budget models (in case I have to pay for it) and the higher-end models (in case I can expense it ).

Any suggestions?

Are you looking for PocketPC or a PalmOS PDA? I have the Palm Tungsten E, Sony Clie SJ33, and a Compaq iPAQ. The first two are Palm based, while the iPAQ is a PocketPC. I personally find the Palms easier to use and absolutely love the new PalmOS 5 stuff.

If you are not planning on doing anything hardcore with your PDA, I'd recommend anything from Palm otherwise get a PocketPC.

I'd go with a PocketPC (HP or Toshiba) - get one decked out with Wi-Fi capabilities and everything (write-off!!)

Thanks for the info guys. I found out today that work will get PDA's for some people, but I don't qualify.

Oh well, guess I gotta pay on my own. They do recommend Pocket PC though. Guess I have some research to do!

Tom,

Yes, the Dells are Pocket PC. I think the Axiam A3 is the one with built in Wi-Fi.

There is a guy at work who has the earlier model and it is sweet, which is why I'm leaning towards the Axiam w/ Wi-Fi. Plus it uses SD cards and every other gadget I have (GPS, camera MP3 etc) all use the SD card format.

I hate to burst the Pocket PC bubble, but if you're looking for an organizer and not something to play games on, you might want to look at the Palm Pilots. I used to have an HP Jornada, and I didn't like having to go and close the programs I was using if I didn't want the thing to slow way down...not to mention the fact that I had to hard reset it every month. I used to be in the Pocket PC camp, but then I got the Tungsten C with its keyboard and built-in wifi, and I love it!

In reality, go to somewhere like Best Buy where you can play with both Operating Systems, and choose the one that you prefer. When it all comes down to it, both are doing the same thing, just in different ways. Good luck with your new toy!

i consider myself pretty well organized but pdas (for me at least) do not organize my life, but complicate it.

having had 2 PDAs, i find them utterly useless. they are a pain in the butt to carry around, you always have to synch them w/ your computer and recharge the dang batteries. not to mention, for whatever reason, you'll always seem to misplace them!

tom: save the big dollars for the other toys you want to get.

This is quite simple to narrow down:
First do you want an organizer or a device that functions almost like a PC? That is the first thing you need to decide on. Once you know that then the rest is easy.

If you decided I just want an organizer for dates, phone numbers, memos, notes, etc.. then go with the Palm.

If you want all of that and more, like Word, Web surfing, and much more, then you want a PPC (Pocket PC) and if you want that then absolutley go Ipaq for other models have all kinds of problems. If you don't believe me go to PPC forums and read all about them.

The Ipaq is like the Palm of organizers. What I mean is when people want an organizer than the only way to go is Palm, so when they want a PPC the only way to go is Ipaq.

You can do that on the Palm as well. The Palm comes with software to edit Word, Wxcel, and Powerpoint files, as well as a version of a web browser. I used to believe that the PPC could do WAY more than the Palm, but then I got the Tungsten C.

I had a Palm and I currently use a PocketPC device. As as said above, get the Palm for pure organizer functionality (although, if you use Outlook, the PPC is integrated into Outlook much better) and the PPC for a more "PC" experience.

That said, if you carry a cellphone, you might check out Samsung's new i600. It's a PPC-like PDA and phone combo (runs MS's new Phone OS). It's about the same size as your average flip phone (it's a hair larger than my Samsung A310), but has limited pda capability (mail, contacts, calendar, media, web, etc). It has a SD/IO slot for Secure Digital/MMC storage cards or the newer SDIO cards (supposedly ethernet, bluetooth, etc in a SD format). It's $500 from Verizon Wireless with a 2yr contract. I'll probably get one next year after prices drop a little (I need a new PDA and I'll need a new phone by then).

Samsung also has something similar, but in PalmOS that's offered by Sprint. I haven't seen it, but the specs sounds nice.

They also have a full fledged PPC PDA/Phone/Camera, but it's the size of a regular PDA.
