Thumbs up Dakar Rally on OLN

I think the first episode of Outdoor Life Network's coverage of the 2005 Dakar Rally is on right now (Saturday 9:30pm).

How many out there are interested in watching this? I certainly love watching rally coverage.

If any of you are familiar with offroad racing or Nascar, Robby Gordon won the first car stage in the Red Bull VW Touareg. He was the first ever American to win a car stage in the Dakar.

Those big giant trucks are too cool especially the old footage before they made restricting rules on them.

Sweet! I love watching Rally more than any other motor sport. Thanks for pointing it out. I will have to try and catch some of that.

I think OLN is the only one that has the rights to cover the Dakar this year.

I've been following it from Stage 1, with added interest in Robbie Gordon's early success. I must say that the wind was completely taken out of my sails after the tragic deaths of Fabrizio Meoni and José Manuel Perez. Fabrizio in particular was an astounding loss to the world of motorcycle endurance racing. A two-time winner of the Dakar, an ever shining light of optimism while enduring superhuman challenges, Meoni will be sorely missed. RIP Fabrizio.

Has anyone died during this year's Dakar Rally?

Meoni didn't die during this year's Dakar, right? Is he the one they profiled who died last summer?

One of the cars had a wreck this year that was so bad I have a hard time there were any survivors. The entire car seemed to be flattened and spread all over the place. I hop the occupants were okay, but I don't know how that could possibly be the case.

I loved watching it lastnight but I was getting pretty annoyed at the 6min of Dakar and 15min of commercials.

I watch the race every year, and am always dissapointed with the coverage. It is the ultimate offroad event in my books.

My wife and I were watching it lastnight and she noticed the hair on my arm standing on end during the bike portions. I used to desert race and while just seeing them riding at those speeds made my adrenaline pump, I have crashed at those speeds too and seeing those racers die made me realize how glad I am I stopped before killing myself. If I had the chance to race it I am pretty sure I would do it in a truck not a bike.

btw the race is no longer paris to Dakar. Its Barcelona to Dakar. The start and finish locations vary year to year.

R.I.P. Jose Manuel Perez and Fabrizio Meoni

Yeah, I noticed I wrote the subject wrong about a minute after I submitted it and tried to edit it to just "Dakar". Obviously it didn't work.

This is the most coverage I've ever seen on this race, or any rally for that matter. I wish there was more, but I am thankful we are getting as much as we are.

Here are some questions for the group: Why are there not more American brand vehicles racing? I saw a Ford, but that was about it. Are the trophy trucks used in the Baja 1000 not equiped to handle this race? What are the major differences between the trophy trucks and the Dakar rally vehicles?

This is what Ryan Arciero(one of the American Toyota drivers) posted in this thread: http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12039

"This was a chance for me to see how the rally operates, since Mark has already gone and done it twice, it was my turn to check it out. We desperately want to put together a proper American team that is capable of going over there and winning against the Mitsubishi's, Volkswagons, and Nissan teams. After seeing and expereinceing the rally first hand I know now more than ever that it can be done. The only thing the Americans are missing for the success of Dakar is the Money. I stongly believe we are close to a formula for success."
