Oklahoma people

I have some questions for you, first off,

1)whats the weather like there on average?

2)whats the going rate on vehicle license registration fees?

3)just how bad is tornado season?

4)what are some areas to avoid?(if any)

5)is there any fourwheeling areas that have trails, and rocks to crawl over?

6)how is the humidity?

7)how prevelant are snakes?

8)what about poison oak/sumak/ivy?

9)what kind of nasty bugs, and how bad are they?

10) closest ski/snowboard area?

11) does it snow there very often if at all?

thats all that I can think of for now, I am sure that I will think of more, I have a friend that might be moving back there, and its awfully tempting after looking at house prices to go with him to become a farmer

I live next door to Ok. & have been through many times. I'll give you what I know:

1 - like anywhere in the South Central U.S. too hot in the summer & nearly too hot in the winter now days

2 - dunno, have to wait for an Okie to answer that

3 - bad, have a basement or a reinforced concrete storm/bomb shelter! Tornados are awesome in their destructive power, worse than a hurricane but in a much more narrow track.

4 - depends on what you like in the way of terrain; Ok. is one of those strange places like Co. where the Eastern part of the state isn't anything like the Western part. The East has hills & trees & lakes & the West has...well, grass.

5 - in the Eastern part there is. I've never been there but I hear Disney (not as in Walt) Ok. is fun.

6 - Depends on the season & the region; it can be 100% for weeks on end.

7 - not certain on this but in the Eastern part I think you will run into more of a variety of poisonous snakes & in the Western part fewer of all of them except the Diamond back which there are more of.

8 - Eastern part

9 - dunno, have to wait for an Okie to answer that...but if it's like Arkansas the chiggers will be the main vermin to cause near insanity & on occasion, horseflies & noseeums

10 - ? During the winter Western & Northern Ok. get more snow & there aren't any "ski resorts" anywhere....no real mountains at all. I'd say Colorado would be the closest for that.

11 - see 10 above

2. dunno

3. panhandle = bad

4. stay away from panhandle

5. disney, ok

6. panhandle = dry

7. lots of them

8. not that i have seen

9. dunno really

10. closest place to me is new mexico or calorado (about 250-300 miles)

11. it snows some, but can get real bad

okay one more thing since I have been doing A LOT of research, how bad/often are the flash floods in the tulsa area? and how about northeast of there? and how bad are the droughts? cause that was the other concern out that way, and how hard would it be to irrigate fields?

For irrigation alot of what i see is center pivot irrigation. We are putting up some wind turbines (160) and one of the properties has a 3/4 mile center pivot irrigation, so thats a 1.5 mile diameter circle of crops. The farmer puts corn on one side and beans on the other.

I'm in Tulsa

1)whats the weather like there on average?
Things change here fast - for example Sat & Sun it was in the 60s-70s, today it won't get up to 40. Rainstorms can blow up outta nowhere.

2)whats the going rate on vehicle license registration fees?
We're known for being high - but for your vehicle it's cheap. The older, the cheaper. For my '97 BMW Z3 it was $63.50 ... (that's the only one I have a record of right handy)

3)just how bad is tornado season?
If you're not a moron, you can *usually* spot tornadoes and get out of the way. And chasing them is fun. And there are certain weather patterns which means you are more or less likely to have a tornado in a particular area. Oh yeah, you can live here for 90+ years and never actually see one (only the aftermath), like my grandma...

4)what are some areas to avoid?(if any)
Tornado Alley, down around Norman & west towards Tuttle.
Watch out for any land that's been polluted by oilfield trash, sometimes the groundwater can be very bad because of that...check around with locals, they'll tell you.

5)is there any fourwheeling areas that have trails, and rocks to crawl over?
Not a whole lot... we go to Arkansas and Missouri a lot for that. There is however, a decent amount of stuff in the SE corner of the state, and north of Tulsa there is Grand Lake of the Cherokees, below the dam they have quite an area to play around in. There are not a lot of real trails, like in the Rockys, where you actually GO somewhere. It's mainly obstacle based here...

6)how is the humidity?
Humid. blah. Don't come here if you're from Colorado
But it's not as bad as some other states I've been, and don't let that keep you from coming. In Western OK the wind blows it all away.

7)how prevelant are snakes?
Yeah, we got 'em. Water moccasins near the ponds, copperheads in the henhouse, rattlers under rocks. Those are the only ones you have to be afraid of. I grew up in the country and we killed maybe 2-3 a year, that's with chickens and stuff around.

8)what about poison oak/sumak/ivy?
Poison oak and ivy, if you learn what they look like and how to prevent getting a rash, you can avoid it. (wash w/ lots of water after any contact, don't intentionally handle it with bare skin, don't smoke it.)
Poison sumac only grows in swampy areas (we don't have much of that) but some people are allergic to the normal sumac.

9)what kind of nasty bugs, and how bad are they?
Not too bad. A few mosquitos...

10) closest ski/snowboard area?
Angle Fire, NM..? Lots of people go to Colorado... 10-12 hrs

11) does it snow there very often if at all?
We get 3-4 big snows a year. "big" = sticks on the ground more than 2 days.
People don't know how to drive in it, best to stay home because of them!

In Western OK, there is a lot of irrigation. Out east (Tulsa) you don't hardly see any, it just doesn't get that dry. Flash floods? Mainly in the creeks... although in the last couple of years northeast of Tulsa they have had some more serious incidents. Pick some high ground, you'll be OK. Again, ask the locals, we are really friendly.

Droughts affect everybody everywhere, OK is no worse and probably a little better than average.

Ditto, and now i am looking at a bunch of snow and ice right outside my window, so no work for me today. And tomorrow is supposed to be 60 degrees.

Im from the oklahoma city area, which is rights smack dab in the middle of the state.

1)whats the weather like there on average? Hot summers, decently cold winters.

2)whats the going rate on vehicle license registration fees? Haha Not really sure.

3)just how bad is tornado season? Bad in certain areas, nothing to worry about just grab a lawn chair and watch em roll by.

4)what are some areas to avoid?(if any) I dont know any bad areas really, its all good here.

5)is there any fourwheeling areas that have trails, and rocks to crawl over? Not unless you like mudding. Oklahoma is so flat theres not a whole lot of good wheeling.

6)how is the humidity? Bad when the wind isnt blowing, but its so windy here you never notice.

7)how prevelant are snakes? Here and there, nothing to worry about.

8)what about poison oak/sumak/ivy? Its around in the wooded areas.

9)what kind of nasty bugs, and how bad are they? Nothing besides the summertime mosquitos.

10) closest ski/snowboard area? Colorado

11) does it snow there very often if at all? a few times every winter, enough to keep the kids happy and out of school everyonce in a while.

Again, I live in the middle of town so my prices may differ from "farm prices"...

FEB 08
I paid $46.39 (plus taxes and fees = 55.26) for 553 KWH, which comes out to a total cost of $0.099927667269439421338155515370705 / KWH

AUG 07
I paid $118.13 (plus taxes and fees = 143.00) for 1616 KWH, which comes out to a total cost of $0.088490099009900990099009900990099 / KWH...

Monthly - Yeah, OK is pretty cheap on the cost of living.

FYI, Gas here is about $3.09 right now and Diesel (highway) is $3.65 I think. Not sure what the offroad diesel price is...

Theres Angel Fire, Sipapu, Santa Fe, and Taos for boarding if you're looking at NM. They are all in the same mountain range that runs from the north to south. So they are all probably within the same distance.

I flew into Hobart, OK, last year in september and it wasn't unpleasant at all during the day, kind of dry.

just had a thought, since you are near Tulsa, what do you know about muskogee, and okmulgee? I know from some online research that Muskogee is fairly good sized, but does it still feel like a small town? and I havent done too much research into okmulgee yet, but plan to

Muskogee is fairly small-town. Yeah, they have a Petro and a few new vehicle dealerships, a decent hospital, college, etc. - big town but not anywhere near a city.

They also have a new Tractor Supply there

Lots of Indian heritage too in that part of the state, for what it's worth.

Okmulgee is smaller...

What kind of farming are you thinking about?

I lived in oklahoma from when I was three to fourteen. I grew up in the Tulsa area in Broken Arrow. The weather is humid in the summer more than the southeast and colder in the winter with the luxary of snow/ ice storms. Muskogee is a small town but is probably starting to develop like a lot of the other areas. If you have kids Oklahomas Union Public schools is has the finest facilities in the nation if not the best. Coweta and Muskogee are both country towns you could find some good land. I only rode ATV's when I lived there but as far a trails go the only ones are know of are in Disney and Little Sahara. Were selling our house in Broken Arrow also if your interested. I know you can also find some land out in still water. I go vist my brother at college up there every year when I visit and they do have open land there.
