Oil & Gas

After watching the tahoe commercial, I had a thought:

Since Oil & Gas is going up so fast in price why don't we do synthetics. Didn't the germans do this in WWII. It is what got them going since there were imbargos.

Just an idea . It seems that it worked for them, would it work for us - would it be chaeper?

Didn't think fuel could be made synthetically, but like the oil, wouldn't it just be more expensive anyway?

fuel can most definitely be synthesized! the problem is, it hasn't gotten expensive enough to buy dino gas to make synthesizing fuel worth it.

You're missing one important point, synthetic oil, and any synthetic fuel, would use coal, natural gas or crude oil as a starting point. If you take already expensive oil or gas and add extra processing you get even more expensive products.

So how did it work for the germans? Did they have a little to start with & refined it to get more? Was it cost effective for them because they simply couldn't get it at all?

They had no other options. It wasn't really cost effective, but when you have only a little of something and you need it to go a long way, you mix other crap in with it......synthetic.

Cost effective doesn't really matter in wartime.

And Germany made their synthetic oil from coal, which they had lots of, and saved the crude they had for gasoline.

Many synthetic oils have extended drain intervals, often negating their higher prices over the long run.
