Non-yota car quality questions

My sister owns a 98 Mitsubishi Montero Sport with 100k miles. It has some problems such as it's burning oil (we don't know where from yet), its alarm is screwy and needs to be replaced and it may have some slight brake issues (im not sure if this is true after just having driven it). My other sister has a 99 Isuzu Rodeo with about 94k miles with no major problems that we are aware of. Does anyone have any experience with either of these two types of vehicles of comparable years? I am asking because my parents are doubting the road-worthiness of either of them for driving between houston and colorado and just daily driving up in colorado. does aynone have any experience? Thanks!

All mitsubishi's burn oil.

THe Isuzu's aren't so bad. We took my friend's dad's to and from florida a couple years ago for spring break. The transmission seemed to only have one fuel curve and that was "on" and "off". You couldn't just lightly accelerate.

May be time to get a couple more Toyotas.

Both are pretty good vehicles. The Montero didn't cost much when it was new and for what it's worth don't have a high failure rate, but where the expenses are is in the cost of repairs. Parts are really expensive and somewhat hard to come by. I would be willing to bet that both vehicles will do just fine. Just check the oil level in the Montero, oil burnage is common.

Go to Barnes and Noble or similar and take a look at Consumer Reports' Used Car Buying Guide. They are pretty darn accurate because they take compiled data from all over, sort it into categories, then mark areas of concern clearly on an easy-to-read graph. We have owned a lot of vehicles over the years and the "trouble spots" listed by CR have always been spot-on; such as the fuel system on our 92 Maxima - junk.

Hope that helps.
