New speakers

I need help looking for some new speakers for my girlfriends 1992 Toyota Camry. She has 6.5's in the front and 6x9's in the rear. I have MB Quarts in my 4runner but I'm not sure what to go with in the rear. I'm looking to spend around $100 per set this includes going to discount sites and e-bay. She is going to push one set with an MTX 30x2 amp that her friend gave her. Should she put the amp on the rears or the fronts? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the advice but I already know what fits. I just need some advice on what speakers people on here have had luck with.

I would power the rear speakers with the amp, since they're further away from the driver and they're 6x9's and should compliment the amp pretty well.

As for brands, I like Infinity, as I have their component set in my truck. I've never heard anybody complain about the way an Infinity sounds, and you should be able to get a pair for what your g/f is looking to spend.

Check out the ZEB. They have the cheapest prices I've ever seen. I've bought from them on 2 seperate occasions, one being the bulk of my stereo equipment I have now. I spend around $400 there when it would have cost me over $800 anywhere else. They don't have Infinity, but they do have a lot of other good stuff. I'd also look at Directed Audio. I've had good experiences with their 6x9's, since I used to have them in my truck before I bought the Infinity components.

I would spend the 200 dollars on a set for the front and just disconnect the rears. Use the amp to run the fronts. I cant stand rear speakers Front stage is the only way to go I deff recommend the quarts and infinities.

Power the fronts. The rears are just "filler". That's the only reason anybody puts 6x9's in the rear. 6x9's put out good midbass, but are generally muddy compared to round speakers. You want most of the sound coming from the front, where most of the sound reaches your ears. In the rear, the distance to your ear changes the sound and you aren't going to notice the clarity problems. This is why most people put their expensive speakers in the front, and either don't worry about the back, or put cheap speakers in back.

I have to agree with Pheonix, Polks kick butt. I have 2 10" Polk GNX subs in a custom box right behind my seats and they sound awesome. I definitely recommend looking on EBay. I got both my subs for around $80 with shipping brand new.

I like the Infinity line-up as well. I've heard complaints about lack of bass from them but that will depend a lot on their mounting (not really sure what people are expecting for bass from a 5.25" or 6.5" speaker but whatever).

General convention says to run the front speakers off the amp but that's a personal choice. As one installer tried to convince me once, when you go to a concert do you stand with your back to the stage to hear the music? Now with that being said I personally prefer my rears to be about equal with the fronts.

It's largely a very personal choice for both the brand of speakers and the way they are run. If they aren't going in a vehicle you're going to be driving, have her pick out the speakers themselves. I always have my wife come along when I've narrowed down speaker choice as women generally hear better in the higher range. So it may sound find to me but she might cringe when the high notes are played. Just a thought.

My recommendation is gonna be Eclipse point source, yes rears are mainly ment for fill but not everybody is going for a competition setup and or has a 5.1 setup in there auto. For everyday listening the point source sound exceptional although a little pricy, the entry/mid level eclipse are also great sounding...I've given up on quart since they are now owned by rockford, and focal are way overpriced...Diaminds sound good but take some tweeking/work to get to sound right...JM2C...

I would say power the rear 6x9's in the car. I just upgraded my girlfriend's civic with Sony Xplods all around to compliment her Sony deck. Here speaker sizes are the same as your situation with the Camry. The rear speakers sound great with nice bass and lots of mid and highs. The rear speakers are where almost all of her sound is coming from. I think it is the shape of the window right above the rear speakers that bounces all of the sound towards the front. The power will compliment the 6x9's nicely, they definitely hit harder and lower than the 6.5's in the door.

My truck, on the other hand, all of the sound definitely comes from the front. I can barely hear the rear speakers unless I adjust the fade.

Power the front speakers.. leave the rear as "fill". As most agree with, the frontstage is where you want the music. As for brands,

try: Crystal Audio components (sound domain) their subs are awesome and I've tried their component sets in several cars... they sound awesome... Also, if you can find a good deal on ebay or something... Boston Acoustics .. that what I currently use.

I'll through my 2 cents as well. Go to thezeb.com and order the CDT cl-61a 6.5 comp set for the front and the CDT cl-6x coaxials for the rear. Amplify the comp set and run the rear speakers off the head unit power. It will sound great.

DO NOT POWER THE REAR SPEAKERS WITH AN AMP!!

Unless you power the front and have the rear frequency set correctly with a Bandpass filter on it

Do you take your home speakers and put them behind you?
You want your sound comming from the front.

yeah....

most people arent into competitions or how their "soundstage" appears in a camry!

If you power the rears, it will be easier to run the wires and you will get more bass, because the 6x9's have a larger cone area and are using the trunk as an infinite baffle enclosure vs. the doors, which will give you very little bass.

just offering a real-world opinion.

Thank you! That is what I was saying, originally. In my truck, all I can really hear is the fronts. But in the Honda Civic, the 6x9's in the rear really pound pretty hard and I can hardly hear the 6.5's in the doors. They are all Sony Xplods, with a Sony deck.
