Thumbs up Network Firewalls ?

For the last 2 years I have had Intel's Anypoint Home Network (10MbPS), which uses the phonelines for the network. It also came with a stripped down version of Black Ice for a firewall. This was on my dialup connection.

After I connected to cable last week I noticed a lot of modem activity and my connection was sluggish. After checking the BI log I saw one IP that seemed to be hitting me consistently and I think he was connecting and using my computer as a link. I disabled my bundled firewall and installed Mcafee's Personal Firewall Plus.

I was lucky because I had file sharing turned off.

McAfee seems to be doing it's job because for the first few hours it was constantly popping up with an "event blocked" notification. Now it has dropped off a little. There were a few IP's that had multiple events so they must have been the one's who were connecting.

The Plus version has a world map feature that will trace the connection route around the world, a nice toy if you want to see where they are located.

Sounds like you had someone port scanning your box or denial of service. Butthole people find "vulnerabilities" within systems and use it in there favor.. You may or may not have gotten away unscathed, time will tell..

I think it was port scanning. After McaFee was installed I went to the GRC site and checked "ShieldsUp", 'Port Scan' and Leak Test" and GRC couldn't access my computer or the ISS client. They showed "stealth" for my ports so hopefully the door is closed.

Today I only had random "events", not repeats, so I hope I closed it quick enough....
