Navajo Lake NM Fishing

This weekend I'm heading up to Navajo Lake in New Mexico, it's on the border between us and Colorado. I'm not worried about the truck getting there and back what I am worried about is actually catching fish. I'm being followed by a friend and his wife in thier Jeep and neither one of them has ever been fishing. I know, strange. Anyway I want to get them out there, set up a camp site and catch some supper but having never been there I don't really have any reference on where to camp.

Anyone have any advice on Navajo Lake or New Mexico fishing in general? I'm used to surf fishing for sharks down in Texas.

first make sure there are no restrictions on these, if its a state park I am not sure about camping but I know in NF its OK unless stated "day use" only. Most of the lakes are stocked well but I would bring a "back" up dinner in case something doesn't happen. Otherwise its like camping and fishing at most other places.
I haven't been to that particular lake but I have been wheeling/camping around the state so I am familiar with some of the area. Oh make sure you get "temp" license.

Thanks for the reply! I looked up the fire restrictions and there are none so far. I'm hauling a camp stove and some beef just in case. I've had my license every year we've been here even though I haven't used it, support the state and all that.

I'll post up some pictures and maybe a report when I get back.

Thanks again.

The San Juan river just west of Navajo Lake is supposed to be pretty kick ass for fly fishing. I'm not a fisher myself but I've heard plenty about it.

Thanks! I actually tried fly fishing a couple of times but couldn't get the hang of it. After I snapped off a dozen flies and stuck a hook in the back of my ear I decided fly fishing wasn't for me.
