My Tent is Better Than Yours...
My Tent is Better Than Yours
<HR style="COLOR: #575757" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Because its not a tent, its a camping hammock. Packs down to 9"x6" cylinder, weighs 2 Lbs, 8oz. Cost, $89 with shipping. ![]() WTF? A hammock for camping? Are you high? Maybe. ![]() Step one- Find two suitable supports about 5-9 paces apart and wrap the tree straps on. The straps prevent damage to tree bark and porch paint. ![]() This is all one piece. The mosquito netting is sewn all the way around the nylon base. The side lanyards and end support ropes are also sewn in. You might now ask, "How do you get in that sombitch?" I'll get to that in a sec. ![]() Weather protection comes via the rainfly. It has its own side lanyards and the ends hook onto knots that can slide along the support ropes. Here I have the rainfly lanyards down low for maximum protection from wind driven rain. The sides are adjustable for different ammounts of ventilation in different conditions. ![]() Q- So, how ya get in that sombitch? A- The foot end has a slit in the bottom held shut with velcro. Open it, stick your head in. ![]() Turn around and sit, then pull your legs inside. ![]() Your weight automaticly closes the velcro entry slit and its beddy-bye time. I like to sleep with my feet up but lying slightly diagonal will make a perfectly flat horizontal sleeping position on your side or back. ![]() ...And i'm snug as a bug. Without any practice it took me about 5 minutes to set up. With practice it should be about 2 minutes. No longer will I have to find flat ground that is clear of rocks and lumps. Any boulder strewn slope with two trees will do thank you. This eliminates the need for bulky foam pads or Therma-rest type bedding. My old tent/pad setup took almost 2 cubic feet. This takes 1/3 a cubic foot. As I use it more i'll update as I find drawbacks and benefits. My initial impression is that this will be a hot setup for motorcycle camping. |

There is still something to be said for a closed cell pad to provide insulation on those COLD nights. Other than That, it looks pretty damn swell. Where'd you find it?

And what do you do when there aren't a couple of trees to tie onto? Nice idea if you can find something to tie onto.
I want to get a pack from Moonbow one of these days. It takes the concept a little further.

Q: How do you get out?
A: Once out of your sleeping bag, raise your legs, open the velcro, pop your legs out, walk out. Q: Where'd you find it? A: http://www.hennessyhammock.com/catalogue.htm## Q: What do you do when there aren't a couple of trees to tie onto? A: Ride toward trees. No trees means no firewood. Who wants to camp without a campfire? Regarding cold weather; Some experimentation is being done with the foam/foil truck windshield sunshade things you can buy at AutoZone. The foil is the same as Emergency Spaceblanket material and the foam backing is closed cell, about 1/8th inch thick. This with two fleece blankets might eliminate the need for a sleeping bag alltogether. In the meantime i'll use my Kelty Cayenne +5 degree bag. Last edited by jx94148 : 03-01-2005 at 02:33 PM. |

Pardon my ignorance but WTF is truckhaven? Worst case scenario, i'd have to tie onto the bike and a fencepost or clothsline or something. However where I camp there is always plenty of trees. The high winds that usually come with treeless areas make tent camping pretty sucky. High winds would make this thing even suckier, therefore I always camp amongst trees.

I move and turn around too much at night, so it would not work for me.
Maximum weight capacity? |

Matt,
Just think, you crawl in a homely catapillar and emerge a lovely butterfly. J/K Ray Really a nice tent, but it looks like a cocoon.

you can find a lot of tips on cold-weather (and any weather) usage of those hammocks (I have one too!) in the forums on www.backpacking.net.

hmmm...right about mouth-level for a grizzly. He won't even have to put his head down, he'll just scoop you up mid-stride.

seriously, don't you want to be on the ground when you sleep? SOmething about preventing the cold air from circulating completely around you that keeps you warmer?

That's pretty cool, I might actually get one. Down here it doesnt really get all that cold so the warmth issue won't be so bad. How about air circulation inside it? I would be afraid of suffocating almost.
