mp3 player

so theres approximately 402834723 out there, and ive narrowed it down to two, and they are actually the same one pretty much.

the creative labs zen 8gb microphoto or the zen 20 gb photo player

they are pretty similar in size, with the 20 gb only being about an inch taller, and 2 ounces heavier. as far as price, the 20 gb is 199, and the 8gb is 189 (pricing from dell.com). im sure i could find different prices somewhere else, but im just using their site as a base.

anyone have either player? i would love to hear some feedback about them from yotatech. ive read reviews on the internet, but ive come to trust yotatech more. also, obviously i havent made up my mind if i need the 20gb....ill be a college freshman next year, so i wont be driving as much as i am right now, and all my music is on my laptop. ill mainly be using it for workouts and the times i will be driving. this is why i lean towards the 8gb, however i can get 12 more gb for only 10 dollars extra. its a tad bigger, so i just dont know.

any opinions, whether youve had one of these or not, would be appreciated. i like to hear other peoples opinions, because i might not have thought of everything.

why not an ipod of some sort?

Im courious as to your choice to elimitate it as i also dont have an MP3 player but probibly will be getting one soon and cant figure out whats important in them.

what were your critical criteria?

Kudos for not going with iPod... Apple's DRM is getting worse by the day... plus they lose their value faster than anything I've seen. Not that Zens keep their value any better... but you have more flexibility with one. Plus I like the way they work better too.

I dunno. I have a 4gb ipod nano and a 20gb zen touch and neither have given me any problems. Only thing I hate about both is the software you need to use. Wish it were just simple usb plug and play.

Doesn't the Zen Touch show up as an MTP device in Windows when you plug it in? I thought Creative updated the firmware to be PFD compatible which would let it do this...

If I lost you with that , just connect up the Zen and look in My Computer to see if you have an icon without a drive letter, like this:

If you do, then you can click on there and browse the device. That'll allow drag & drop:

The thing you CAN'T do is assign a drive letter to it.

As of tomorrow this will hopefully be my MP3 player...

Buy.com has a 1gb microSD card for $22 with a SD converter and I'm not one to need ALL of my music at once. 1gb will do me just fine... [hijackon]anyone that wants a Sprint Treo650 w/ accessories for cheap let me know! [hijackoff]

i have a black zen microphoto 8gb. its mainly used in my car and i guess its okay. the battery dies pretty quickly if you turn the unit on and off repeatedly. Like say you go in and out of your car alot, each time turning the unit on or off. Also, its kinda sensitive. One drop and that could be it for the player. I bought an outer silicone skin for it just for protection. the controls are a lil sensitive and it can get annoying when your driving and u cant get the unit to highlight the right song. I rarely use the photo option cuzz id rather listen to music while i drive and not look at photos. however, they do look really nice ont he screen. I've grown to like it but if i had found something other than the microphoto while i was shopping for an mp3 player then i would have bought it. Perhaps you should consider the zen vision M. its a lil more expensive but i hear its a great performer. hope that helped.

I replaced my iPeed with a 40gb Toshiba Gigabeat. It was less than $180 and plays mp3 and WMA files. The battery life is pretty good, too.

Snap-on,
Yes you can, you can even play the "crap you download off the internet" on an iPod... No matter what you get I would suggest getting some sort of hard mount that will help keep it from vibrating/sliding all over the place. Even a cell phone holder that could double as an iPod holder would be a good idea. One of the adjust able ones...

If you download music in iTunes, it can only be played on that machine. Maybe one or two others, I forget. If you can copy music to your iPod, but you can't copy it off (with the exception of WinAmp, but that's another story). iTunes basically has the DRM stuff. My iPod is full of songs, and not a single one came from iTunes.

If you think about it, coming from an artists perspective...

Thats the way all MP3s should be. Too bad for the music industry they didn't think of the idea of compressing music before the computer world did. I have been using MP3s since middle school (1997 for all you fogies out there ) if they had jumped on the band wagon then, they might not have quite the problem that they do now. If a painter was to sell a painting... he wouldn't want you do be able to take it home and put it on as many computers as possible would he? iTunes allows you to register 5 computers to a specific account. How many people own more than 5 computers? Especially that they need to play music out of? Its apple's way of looking out for the artists, thats all... yes, artists these days make a lot of money but believe it or not that is part of the job. Being in the spotlight isn't an easy thing, and personally I would be pissed if I had to live with being in the public eye if I wasn't getting paid millions... They have NO privacy... I couldn't imagine what that would be like, nor do I want to. I guess thats why I'm studying to be behind the camera in stead of in front of it...
