If you go into the Marines you will be an Infantry because deep down every Marine is a Rifleman

If you want to do cool stuff, go into the Marines. If you want something that will transfer into a real world job better, Air Force.

I spent 4 years snooping around on an Army Long Range Survellance Team in Alaska...Going to Hawaii to train at K-Bay with the Marines was a nice vacation in the middle of winter.
When on the ground guarding an air field in Haiti the first night we couldn't figure out what the whirring sound we heard above the generators...found out later it was for the air conditioners for the Air Force tents

Air Force has better housing than Marines and Army from what I saw in 7 years of Active duty...

Good luck!

Here's what my sister had to say:

Imagery analysis is not a direct entry MOS in the Marine Corps so if he went that way he would have to do something else for at least 3 years before he could make a lateral move into imagery analysis. Air Force and Marine squints go to the same school.

The Marine Corps is hard, the Air Force is easy. That is my opinion. If he is joining for a job - go into the Air Force, if he is joining for a lifestyle, join the Marine Corps. An Imagery Marine is a Marine who knows how to interpret imagery. And an Imagery Airman is a person who interprets imagery and happens to be in the Air Force. There is a difference.

In either service he will need to attain a certain score on the ASVAB and GMT to get into the intelligence field - he needs to be prepared to do a different job if he doesn't score high enough

Hey man I'm not a recruiter or anything so I'm not going to try and sell you to the Marines. I will tell you this though, it's not for everyone. I've seen a lot of guys come and go because they just weren't happy with the lifestyle. The bottom line here is that it is what you make of it. You're going to go to some awesome places and some not so nice ones. But you have to go in everyday with a good attitude no matter what the situation otherwise it's going to eat you up and leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. I've made it 7 years now and I've got some great memories. I always have a paycheck coming, 3 meals a day and a place to sleep. You can't get fired and you get promoted as long as you stay out of trouble and do what your told.

Right now I do data networking and security and it's a pretty cool job. I've also done some satellite work and humped a radio a few times so you don't always get key holed into a specialty. If you want to know more hit me up or talk to a recruiter.

and curious... in the air force, when you graduate from BMT, and are out on town pass friday and saturday (and sunday if you're an honor flight/graduate, etc), can you have a beer? or is alcohol 100% forbidden until you get into the 3rd phase of tech school?

Alcohol is a no when you are out on your day pass, alot of people would go to hotel rooms change into civys and then go grab a beer. As far as tech school the phase system is really lame but it is set up because alot of people just can't figure out how to live responsibly on their own when they join the military.
You will also live in dorms at your first base that may or may not be dry. I was in a dry dorm and that was kinda bad, but where I am now the dorms aren't dry and people seem to enjoy hanging out more often and moral is better, go figure.
Like I said let me know what AFSC youo pick and I'll get you a list of the duty assignments you can go to.

(ill drop to 202, then by afternoon be at 205, some days ill be at 203, then go to 207, etc). i ultimately want to drop to below 200 before i go to the recruiting station for the air force.

talk with your doctor or a registered dietician or nutritionist or check with your local health unit (canadian term!) through city hall etc. contact a local university or college that has some sort of healt curiculum and see what they can offer.

good luck and let us know how things work out.

Good advice there lee... don't go trying any of those "supplements" most of them are crap and could do a lot of damage... you might even try talking to the recruiters they might have some good advice too 'cause if you bust your intake physical for over weight it looks bad on them right?
Talk to your doc.

its simple put out more than you take in..in otherwords you need to burn more calories than you eat..exercise more and eat less..portion control is key more so than food selection, although that is important too..If you drop weight enough to get in but can't hack boot camp they will put you in PCP platoon in boot camp until you drop weight,we call it "Pork Chop Platoon" hahaha

Check out crossfit its intense and fun, for improving your PT. PPL tend to push themselves harder when they workout in a group if everyone is motivated. If loosing weight and endurance are the big concerns don't lift heavy weights as they will make you heavier.

As you workout more dropping weight will seem to be more difficult, as you gain muscle and loose fat. Muscle weighs more than fat. A good diet is important for lossing weight, alot of foods are high caloric, fast food, refined sugars, fried foods, colas.. there are several different programs yadayada. some suggestions I've known to work are: peleo and zone. The big thing is to make sure your getting suffecient nutrition as I've wittnessed and experienced injuries due to this, protien is a biggie. You don't want to arrive for the biggest challenge of your life with your body beginning to breakdown because of poor nutrition. It'll do you good to research the nutrition thing as weight control is a constant in the military.

For a PT test you can train yourself to perform better. If your talking to a recruiter, get him/her to grade your pushup and situp. I've seen people's score drop big time do to poor form. So practice your form when you do these excercises. Don't make your sole exercise routine about pushup, situps, and running and pullups reguardless of what branch basic is intended to stress you and your body, everyone handles stress better when there in a good state of physical conditioning. Your life will have a much better quality through out you military career and especially in basic/boot/bmt whatever. Get one of the pull up bars above, hang it going into your room do pullups going in and push ups coming out in addition to your workout. On days you can't imagine another pullup or pushup, then squats and crunches.

As for the branch ask the recruiters: promotion elegiblity when and how, deployment times, (the air force, is 90 to 120 days the Regular Army is 12 to 18 months), don't assume anything, and BIGGEST of all: No matter what your recruiter says if when you sit down at the MEPS station with whichever branch's contract person get it all in writing. These contract persons are responsible for every new recruit coming through that day, it is in their best interest to get you through as fast as possible, this may not be in your best interest your recruiter will not be with you, ask all your questions about your job and if you don't like the answers don't sign go talk to the recruiter. You can always come back if you don't sign if you do you are stuck, regaurdless what your recruiter says.

I love the Army but there are parts that I dislike, my best friend is a Corpsman that covers a Marine sniper unit. He loves the Navy. I had friends that love the Air force and I've flown lots in their birds, and I've known and loved to fight Marines, but have the highest respect for them, but that was when I was an infantrymen, oh Airborne Infantry. I've enlist three times and only reenlisted once, I've got a little experience with both recruiters and MEPS.

Hit me up on a pm I've got some information that may help you with PT.

if you want to drop the pound only drink water and eat light meals ONLY when you get hungry. Start counting calories. If you drink a lot of soft drinks that's a huge one. No more beer either tubbo and start running everyday. even if its a slow pace get out there and build up that stamina. For pull ups hit up your local recreation park, most have trails for runners with pull up bars along the route. Your weight fluctuates a ton over the course of the day but the best time to weigh yourself is in the morning after you drop a deuce and pee. Being a muscle head is all right but wont help you on the runs. They usually break during boot because they are not used to the diet and running kill their knees carrying all that upper mass. Being lean and having stamina with get you further

If you go down to the Marine recruiter he will help you lose the weight, and help you pass the IST, i can guarantee that.

I was in the Marines for 4 years. HATED it pretty much the whole time i was in, most of that was probably my job and the unit i was with, but now i really miss it and I'm proud of what I have done for myself and my family. I would probably join back up if i wouldnt have just had a baby.

Like everyone else said, it is a whole nother ball game, its not like any other branch.

But you gotta watch those recruiters cause they will try and trick you into signing an open contract.

I would say go talk to them about the jobs you can get into right away that you would like, and take the pre ASVAB and see what jobs you would even be eligable for. But my vote is for the Marines...if you think you can handle it
