i thought the spelling mistake was 'imaginary'! all kidding aside, it comes down to what you want to do. serving your country in whatever capacity you choose, knowing the circumstances of what you will be asked to do and doing it to the best of your ability is something to be proud of.
good luck in your recruitment, stay safe and be proud of your choice. lee

I'd say it depends on if you look better in powder blue or khaki.
AF'ill give you cute little beanie, the Corps a sword... bigger chance you'll spend time at the pointy end of things in the Corps than the AF. Don't just listen to the smoke from the recruiter talk to some people here who are/have been there and done that. Regardless of what your family says it is your life and your decision to serve. You're going to be there for at least the term of your initial contract and possibly a lot longer (stop loss anybody IK there are a few of you here) and you should be where you are going to be happiest.

your family isnt serious, theyll be upset, but then so proud after you make it through. my parents tried everything to get me to not go, even offered a full ride to college, but i didnt take it, i joined instead, have seen some cool stuff and a lot of bad days, but the whole time ive learned through it all. the knowledge you gain makes you beyond valuable. even though i have hated most of the time in, im glad i joined, and i would probably tell you to join the marines just so you can be the best instead just another branch. we are unlike any other branch, that is one thing that is true that the general populus say. i gave you my phone number, you have my email through here and can PM me, ive been to iraq twice, hated it and loved it. may go to afghanistan next year if my wife goes to korea. the marines may not take every where the navy can, but the navy cant offer you the front line stuff the marine corps can. if you parents have questions ask. im not a recruiter, im just a guy who has done 4 years and been through a lot more than most.

There is no comparison between the two.I was in the Marine Corps for 8 years and wouldn't have changed my mind to another branch if they paid me..I dont know why people say "you better not go into the Marines" blah blah blah, If you do when you graduate boot camp your family will have the utmost respect for you and have tons of pride that their son, brother etc is a Marine and honestly more so if you were in the AF..
I went to Afghan in Dec of 02,I was in Iraq when we first invaded in Mar of 03,then again in 05.Been around the world twice,Australia 3 times,Hawaii 3 times,Thailand,Singapore..the list goes on,I've got more seatime on a Navy ship than some sailors, and when I got out even after all the ty times being on post at zero dark thirty freezing your nuts off in some third world country, I DO NOT regret any of it and I'm very proud of where I've been and what i've done,so is my family.. Marines IMO get the most respect out of all branches and honestly you kind of see that when your around other branches, especially the AF and no offense to other branches thats just the way it is ..Thats why we are the few and the proud...If you just want to slide on through your enlistment and get out to tell people yeah I was in the military then go to the AF..If your looking for something more than a paycheck, and the ability to say, yeah I was in the Marines when you get out well you know what to doBut trust me there is a huge night and day difference between the two you can't even compare em,is it great all the time, no way, but that is the same with all jobs, but this one you can't quit.LOL..GL with your choice Last edited by joeynational; 11-04-2009 at 03:26 PM. |

time to make some real money but mainly because i started a family,I have a 6 and 4 year old,and it is tough missing birthdays, holidays etc. and I want to be healthy and alive at that to see them grow up..It is a dangerous job, depending on what you pick and the way things are now a days in this world..I do miss it though
Oh and about your weight issue..The Marine Corps has one of the strictest weight standards around..Are you sure you don't have it backwards? Just didnt sound right to me? and if your underweight they will make you eat double portions in boot camp!! mmmmm "double rats recruit!!" lol Last edited by joeynational; 11-04-2009 at 03:34 PM. |

AF will have better opportunites and i'm sure they have more bases all over the world if you wanted to travel. Marines will give you the opportunity to have a lot of fun, and give you a bigger sense of pride, I love the Corps, i wouldn't trade it for any other service

As for the height and weight that you are at right now, if I were you I worry too much about that. I am in Army ROTC and commissioning in 6 months and I am about 10 pound over the weight standard, I just need to be tape tested before our physical fitness tests, where they measure the neck, chest, and waist. Just because you are over the "weight limit" doesn't mean you aren't in good shape and they are going to reject you. BTW, I run a sub 13 min 2 mile and max the push-ups and sit-ups. Good luck on your decision!
Just wondering, have you considered the Army?

I did 12 in the AF, was actually DEP'd into the Marine's first, had a guarantee'd job as a machinest, they tore up my contract day I was to ship out and gave me some bull about going infantry, I told them to off went down the hall and went AF, on terminal leave now, DOS is 11 Nov - Veterans day.
I was a computer guy and the pay on the outside is phenominal I have been to 41 countries, live in Germany for 4 years, and wouldn't cahnge a bit of it. I've also had my best freinds brains in my mouth and Alot of other stuff I just don't talk about , of course that was when I was forward deployed ot a classified location back in 02. As for this, Think about the Army too, you will move up in Rank Far faster than any other branch, and Yes this matters.Marines - lived on Paris Island from 14-16 and was gung ho as hell ,but the only recruiter that didn't lie to me was AF, I'm now a Reservist with the 920th Rescue Squadron on Patrick AFB, report to them on 12 November. Any branch will give you more of what you need, which is Disapline, and respect, also you will be put in situations no one else will ever come up against. I'd say my first 4 years I regretted joining the AF, but after I saw some battle, and lost some buddies to idiots on the other ends of barrel's, I kinda saw the light in the decision of mine to "cross into the blue". All branches deserve respect, and I've worked with all of them, marines and Army in combat, the Corps is not what it used to be - I was actually more impressed with the Army in Afganistan when I worked with them, nothing against any of them, but the Marines are getting a taste that Occupying is the hardest part of War, not the inital invasion, and nobody does Occupying better than the Army... I've considered a commission in both, and if I was you, go to college first - Pay is better, as well as the scope of what you will do.

Following up to what vandert said, I have 3 buddies at SDSU...One in MC, one in AF and one in Navy. All 3 get paid to go to school. We're ME majors, and it sounds like they will get some pretty awesome jobs once they graduate. Look into that if you want to do more of the technology side aspect of it.

and to whoever was talking about the marine corps weight standard, i was told by a marine recruiter that maximum weight to ship to boot camp is 230, also saw it on a website somewhere. and i still need to work on my running - i just did almost 7 miles in 80 minutes... i consider that slow. typically i run a 11 minute mile. and i doubt the tape test would work on me, cuz i got a beer gut.. ha. its shrinking, because i quit drinking, but still. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/marin...weightmale.htm im about 72.5 inches tall

Oh yeah, any branch, 11 minute mile will Not cut it BTW.
I'm Slow and I run around 7 minute miles... Of course if I slow down to an 8 minute mile I have ran 3 Full marathons at taht pace ![]() The way I look at it, unless you die, you can't go wrong going in the miitary in this economy, and you will more than likely take a paycut when you go in...

You know how the AF builds a base?
Runway, then golf course until they run out of money, then come back for money for hangars, barracks, etc. All that said, you need to talk to a recruiter and see if you can get a guarantee to be in image analysis - it doesn't sound like you're cut out to be an infantryman. BTW - my sister did IA in the Marines, I'll send her a note and see what she says.

Don't let anyone tell you that life in the Air Force will be a piece of cake and you won't deploy. If you go Imagery Analysis, which is an intel job, you WILL deploy, your training will be long before your first base and after you arrive.
I'm in the Air Force and was in the EXACT same spot you are in 6 years ago and I have loved it. I have been to Alaska for 3years, Kyrgyzstan, Vegas, California, Misery(Missouri), and had a short drunken stint in Hungary. Soon I will be in Korea for a year and back to Alaska. Deployments will be 6 months, intel deploys a lot. Good luck! Oh and if you choose the Air Force, PM me and I will look up the authorized bases that career can go to so you don't waste any spots on your first dreamsheet like I did. |
