Lets Talk Maps

For all your folks who still use them what kinds of maps do you get? I have USGS topo maps and backroads explorer for my GPS, but it is only ok and is missing alot. Right now i am looking for printed maps because everything i can find that is digital for PC or GPS is very undetailed.

I am looking for maps of national forest lands and such so not like road maps. I have tried BLM maps and i would say they are the best so far, but still missing alot of info.

What is the most detailed maps i can get a hold of?

Does a gazetteer not do it for you? Otherwise a topo map for your area is about as good as you can get for backroads/ topography right? Those are what I use for maps work

I assume that the logging companys have maps to all of their roads any idea how i can get ahold of those?

(i know that much of the logging roads is private property, but i was told my an employee that you are alowed to hike on those roads and i would love to have a detailed map of all of the roads and trails)

I guess i can start adding any new roads or trails i find to my topo maps my self with my GPS...

Not sure about the logging roads as I have no real experience with those here in southern AZ, but the topos I use have forest service roads, 4WD trails, and other misc roads on them. Granted some are not listed but it's tough to keep up with new roads. One thing I would suggest is Google earth. If you are looking at driving/hiking around in an area that has decent resolution on Google Earth you can see all kinds of trails. Sometimes if it looks driveable on GE it may not be in reality of course.

check out this link, you add it into google earth as a layer, refresh it i your current view, and are then able to download DOQQs and USGS topos for that view. You'll love it

I have both BLM topo and an atlus map by Delorme that I take with me to supliment the software on my Garmin GPS. I also like the Mapsourse software for my GPS, I just have a hard time seeing everything on the little screen of my GPS.

i use the usgs topo maps, i think they're great, especially the ones modified for u.s. forest service with all the road numbers on all the small roads. I have some old ones printed in the '40's that my great grandfather had, they have all the good trails in the wilderness where i go hunting. the old trails are not on any new maps or gps's that i've ever seen.

I use Tom Harrison maps when they have one for the area I'm in. They are expensive but very detailed and worth it.
