Killed a rattlesnake (pics) P.E.T.A members need not apply

For some reason the neighbors always call me for snakes, scorpions, and black widows. Today it was a rattlesnake in my next door neighbor's garage.

Before the shovel:

After the shovel:

After the shovel 2:

Save your flames if you are a snake lover. There was no time to take him out to the desert and there are kids everywhere in the neighborhood.

Isn't Phoenix a great place to live?

Those are VERY dangerous so be careful.
We used to see them out mountainbiking all the time...hiking was a bit more scary (rattle from the bushes right next to you  ). I don't like seeing him dead but it is better than having someone hurt by one.....yeah I'm one of those mushy catch and release guys.

Oh, I know that feeling all to well:

My brother got that one off our front porch last Thanksgiving. You gotta be careful when dealing with those suckers. They'll strike hours after they've been dead. This one had its head blown off and the picture was taken about an hour afterwards. Right after I took the picture, the snake started to arch back as if it was going to strike at him. He dropped it and got away. Now explain to me how it did that without a head.

Rigor mortis?

I have shotshell rounds that I keep for my Glock just in case I run into that problem. Not big in CA but we have a small canyon in our backyard so you never know.

I read a statistic somewhere that 80% of ER snakebite victims have their injury on their hands. I guess everyone thinks they're faster than the snake.

EDIT:
Nice work, Christian

Christian,

You didn't paint it black!?!?

All kidding aside, dude, you're psychotic. So you're telling me you whacked this guy w/ a shovel? I know absolutely nothing about killing rattlesnakes but if I had a choice, a pellet gun would be my first choice.

It also looks like he had a "last meal" or did you bash him in the midsection too?

And so what are you supposed to do with it? Bury it? Throw it in the trash? Make a belt or a head band out of it?

And Chris: are you serious?!?! Man, talk about freaky. I'm such a city guy. I don't know anything about snakes. But I tell ya, if I ever saw something like that, I might've shrieked like a 5 yr old girl!

Man I used to go to Vandenberg AFB for work and OMFG you should have seen all the prarie rattlers and diamondbacks out there. VAFB is like a giant nature preserve in itself but is it downright dangerous to walk in the grass out there. Snakes are everywhere on that base!!!

I got stuck cleaning the bottom of a missile silo in the dark and one popped out of nowhere.....I had to kill that one, there was no where to go for me.

LOL! Dude that was hilarious! I thought about painting him black, but the primer would not stick to him.

It was a shovel or my 9mm with hollow points. I figure my neighbors would much prefer the shovel than a gunshot!

My wife asked the same question. Looks like he had a little dinner. I dont know, I nailed him in the midsection on accident, so maybe that is why he looks bloated. But I must say, this is the skiniest snake I have seen in a long time. They are hungry, and they are grouchy right now. Just like me when I get hungry I guess.

You have to be very careful with them after they are dead, just like some of the guys mentioned. You also need to be very careful with their head because if you step on it (i.e. bury it) you can still get poisoned. So, we put it in a bag and threw him into the bottom of the garbage can. Poor little bugger...

Jamie- I really would have taken him back out into the desert, but there just wasn't time. My neighbor jumped on to the roof of his Blazer. So I had to step it up and kill the snake. I felt like a cross between the Crocodile Hunter and Ricki Ticki Tavi (sp?). ha ha, remember that movie?

Bud, no worries.....I know you had no choice but to be a senseless killer!.... JK!
Rattlesnakes are extremely dangerous so better to kill it in this case.

Next time get us some video!

.22 is my first choice, but inside a garage a shovel usually does the trick. next time i go home i will get a pick with the skin form a rattler my dad killed as a kid in florida. its huge.

But I fear the water moccasin more (cottonmouth). Rattlers will leave you alone until they feel cornered or threatened, then they'll strike (see Christian's first pic :pat: ). Water moccasins will strike out for no reason whatsoever... out of pure meanness if you wanna call it that. I'd rather be confronted by a rattler than a water moccasin anyday.

Once when I was a wee lad, my family went fishing in one of the ponds on our property in a john boat with nothing but a paddle for locomotion. We happened to stir up a moccasin nest in the pond, and I have never been so scared in my life. They were popping up all around the boat, and my dad was having at them with his Beretta 9mm. One almost tagged my sister, but my dad got him just in time... almost taking my ear off in the process. I had nightmares for weeks after that.

Oh yeah... if you're gonna use a pellet gun, I hope you're a good shot. I've run over them with my truck, stopped with the front tire over the body, and turned it vigorously left to right... on pavement. Even though they were pinned, they would strike my tire the whole time (the only reason I did it was b/c they were too close to the house for my comfort). I wouldn't use anything short of a .357 if you're going with a sidearm, but the first thing I'd go for would be a 12 guage.

Christian - I can't believe you got him with a shovel. You got some massive cajones buddy.

One of my brothers goes rattlesnake hunting out in Az...on purpose. He's got a bunch of rattlesnake skins hanging at his house and has a bunch of meat in the freezer.

I've got a couple close encounter stories...

First some background. Back in highschool I was bow hunting deer with my other brother up in northern california. I was up in a treestand about 10-15 feet up and it was getting dark. My brother was coming to meet up with me and all of the sudden I hear, "Oh my god, what the hell is in your tree!" I look down and see a huge porcupine climbing the tree toward me ! Well, that was the fastest I've ever climbed down a tree in my life. The porcupine went on another branch and stayed there while I went back to get my bow.

So the next day I was sitting on the ground near some sage bushes waiting for some deer to come along. Well, I hear some rustling noises up ahead but I couldn't see anything. About 30 seconds of this goes by and it sounds like it's getting closer. Thinking that it could be another porcupine I decided I should get up just in case. As soon as I stand up I hear a rattle! I looked down and saw a rattle snake about 2 feet away coiled up
! I jumped about 10 feet in a single bound. Eventually it slithered away.

The day after that, I was sitting in about the same place on the ground. It was getting dark again and I was expecting my brother to come around to pick me up. All of the sudden off in the distance I hear, AAAHHHHHHH! About a minute later my brother comes up and says he almost stepped on a rattlesnake. Haha.

Hunting makes such great stories.

I used my 30-06 to kill the last rattlesnake. Yeah, I know, it's a little bit of over-kill but I had left my .22 back at the cabin. We were out hog hunting and I was driving back and he slithered across the road. My friend shot at it with his .243 but missed because he looked through his scope. I looked at my gun and then the snake and pulled the trigger. When the dust cleared, there it lay with a hole it it's head. Not too bad for 6 feet away and using no sight.

Anyways, here's what I almost stepped on when I was out hiking last week. I'm just glad I came across it and not the kids that were also on the trail.

In case some of you were wondering, it's a copperhead.

Rattlesnake!
The other white meat.

A week ago Dana and I were Mountain Biking and she almost ran over a 3.5 footer near Point Mugu. Then on Tuesday, my bro is riding with me in La Tuna Canyon and he spots a dead one on the side of the road. What up??
