Hello folks,
Just need some advise since its been about 8 to 10 years i've applied for a new job.
It's just an entree level pc maintainance technician.

I'm a bit worried/nervious/nauscious about the interview (duh, who wouldnt) since its been awhile.

I just keep telling myself, i got nothing to lose.
I really want this job and dont want this interview to blow up in smoke.

Well anyways, i just thought any of you would like to chime in on tips/preparedness and so forth.. anything!
thanks!!

I would stress confidence in what you're doing, even if you're nervous as hell. I realize it's hard to relax, but that's important.

Just remeber that if you can pretend like you know what you're talking about, you're halfway there!

As for tips, you should make sure your appearance is clean and professional, and you might want to think of any questions that the interviewer might ask, and think of your response. Practice the responses in front of a mirror.

Good Luck with the Interview!!

Excellent Communication, show you know what your talking about, and a confident atitude is the best way to go.

I may be in the same boat as you come the end of this year, all thanks to the war effor and now lacking funds for Air Force remediation projects.

I'm in the job market, too, and a little sooner than I would have liked.
Here's some questions I've been asked the most-
Why are you leaving your current position?
What are your salary requirements?
Why do you feel this is the position for you?
Why are you interested in this position?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Those are the questions I've been asked the most.
In a follow-up interview over the phone, I was asked-
Name 5 adjectives that you feel would best describe you.
Tell me your biggest fear about this position.

As stated earlier, look professional and/or conservative. Wear a pressed white shirt and pressed black slacks and a tie. Speak clearly and make eye contact. Act excided to be there. Ask questions. That shows the employer that your are interested.

Hope that helps!

Good luck!!!

Alan

Maintain a positive attitude at all times. Dress professionally. Suit & tie regardless of what you're applying for, it shows respect towards the organization that's interviewing you. Arrive early. Smile. Firm, but not hard, hand shake. Remember your interviewers' names & use them when you first say, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Simpson", or whatever their names are.

Most of all, when asked about previous employment, talk about the good things. Don't be one of those people that think everything that went wrong was the company's fault, or the supervisor, or the manager, or the VP, and so on. This will more, often than not, guarantee you DON'T get the job.

Hope it helps & good luck!

Maintain good eye contact at all times and most importantly, be yourself. If you are getting all the right signals, close the deal. If they have any objections, delve into those further. You might only get one chance in front of these folks. Ask what the next steps need to be...

Dragonbud:

I have in my files a background guideline for a CHP interview. Now, I know you're not going into a cop interview BUT there's a LOT of useful information in there. I'll tell you, if anything, a cop's interview has got to be one of the hardest things out there.

Send me a PM or e-mail with your address and I'll mail it out to you.

Heck, if anyone's interested I can make copies.

my two cents:

1) don't talk crap about your past boss or co-workers. the bait quesiton for this is "why did you leave your past job?" talk about what you did, how you achieved what you wanted to do, how you trained your protege (if there was one) and how it was time to move on

2) know the job description well and translate your education, work, and personal experience into that job. in other words, prove to the interviewer that you can do the job from day one.

3) after the interview, briefly summarize your qualifications and tell them you are very interested in the position. i have a good friend who recruits for a major law firm and he says that such a statement shows that you are interested and not just "interviewing". he remembers the ones that say "given x,y, z, relative to my background and experience, I want to tell you that I'm very much interested in this position."...or somthing to that effect.

good luck,
bob

Do research about the company. They are always impressed with that. Ask them a lot of questions.

Just remember this:

THE INTERVIEW GOES BOTH WAYS. YOU HAVE TO INTERVIEW THEM, AS THEY HAVE TO INTERVIEW YOU.

...dunno if you've already had the interview...buuuuut...

I'm in the job market now...getting a few workshops from the unemployment dept.

From the mouth of an HR person (who worked at a big university, U of WA)...focus on accomplishments. Tell them the improvements you've made in your previous jobs, going beyond the call of duty.

Also, don't put them in a position of feeling pity for you ("Oh, I desperately need this jobs..." yada, yada, yada). You want them to like you, and feel that you're going to be an assett for their company.
