i need help deciding

Hey gyus this Greg. I got a 1990 4 runner. I am thinking of saving up some money and and buying a 2000 chevy blazer with the off road package do you think it will be a good idea to do that or should i buy some other kind of toyota. Which one? or should i set my 4 runner up for off road even though i have 155k on it

I had a 02 blazer as a company truck. STAY AWAY numerous problems w/ the 4x system, front end sucked, major oil leaks at 20K mi! It was way fast though. Buy a later model toyota unless you want the truck in the shop all the time

FYI..The Jimmy/Blazer is on the Comsumer Reports "Used Cars to AVOID List" for NUMEROUS problems. My family had a 97, zillion electrical problems at 100k, leaked LOTS of oil.

Off - road the 4 runner - that's what I do !!!!

Mine has 237,000 miles on it and is still my daily driver - 75 miles per day.
Spend your money wisely - mod the runner - fokk the Chevy idea !

This 1990 4 runner of mine is the most dependable, capable vehicle that I have ever owned. Did I mention how capable it is ?

not to mention the tranny's on those vehicles are absolutely pitiful. from my experience, i haven't seen as much engine problems (on a few of my friends vehicles), but the trannys suck. they have had electrical issues as well as other various chassy problems (suspension, brakes, etc.) on top of tranny. but from what i've seen, the 4.3L is a fairly good engine.

as far as the mileage issue goes, you shouldn't be concerned with 155k. i would go out on a limb and guess that this is your first toyota that you've owned? anyone who has owned multiple toyotas knows that bottom line, the quality in toyotas is spectacular. just take care of her, and she'll take care of you.

if that. if you don't do anything too extreme with offroading, you'll be fine with stock.

I am glad you decided to stay awy from the Chevy Blazer. We have had numerous problems with them at my work. 90% of them were electrical. We got rid of all 6 of them since they were too expensive to maintain.

Modifying your current rig would be fun.

I have one of the best sports car ever built that gets great gas mileage. I think it uses only 2 ounces for about an hour of hard hard driving. I will sell it to you for about $400. The only problem is fitting in it. It would be a really tight fit unless you were to shrink to about 2 inches in height. If you haven't guessed it's an RC toyota supra. All kidding aside though if gas mileage is your only concern you need to look at the numbers. For example using my sold 86.5 Toyota Supra with the inline 6 turbo and my 93 Toyota P/U 4wd stock for only 4 more days. I will be using $2 a gallon just for ease of numbers, but feel free to change it to what your gas is.

Supra - got about 25 miles to the gallon easy driving and it had a 16.5 gallon tank. So that puts it at 410 miles per tank and each tank costs $33 to fill from empty. And with filling it up 1.5 times a week (a lot of driving) that would bring your yearly gas total to about $2600.

Truck - gets about 18 miles to the gallon on average with easy driving and it has a 17.5 gallon tank. So that puts it at 315 miles per tank and each tank costs $35 to fill up from empty. Now using the same mileage each week for the Supra that means I am filling my tank of my truck exactly 1.95 times but we will call it 2 just to be nice. So that means my yearly gas cost is $3640.

Now there is a difference of $1000 in gas per year or roughly $20 per week difference.

Now to me, and I don't make a lot of money, that is not enough savings to justify getting a sports car. Now if you got a 4cyl you would save some more, but a sports car in my book means that car can get up and move fast and handle really good. Hopefully this gives you some food for thought. Personally, keep the runner, but do what you want to. That was my $.02 and then some.

You've come to the wrong place asking whether to buy a Toyota or Chevy. You'd get much more unbiased information on a General auto forum then here. If you were to goto a Chevy Forum and ask whether to get a Toyota or not you'd get the exact same answers you got here, cept the total opposite..hehe....as far as a 00 Chevy Blazer...

Its comes with the bulletproof 4.3 liter, which alot of guys (some on this forum) put into there yotas...I owned a s-10 with that engine and I loved it, my step-father owns a 84 Blazer with 270,000 miles on it with no problem (he actually gave the truck to my step brother who could blow up a ferrari so I dont expect it to last to much longer). The 4.3 is a 350 with 2 cylinders cut off, and everyone knows how tough a 350 is. The Blazer comes with the 4l60e transmission, in a Blazer this tranny is bullet proof...Chevy uses this transmission in there full size trucks too and can still handle more power. I believe is slightly modifed for the balzer because of the weight differences. Everything else on the vehicle is typical of Chevy, over sized front and rear...I dunno much about the 4x system but I dont here too many problems out of it, at least anymore then you here out of yota's 4x system (check the repair section)....so all and all i think its a decent vehicle....I prefer my yota because I like the looks, but as far as build quality i'd compare the too...oh cept the sheet metal is thinner on my yota compared to my s-10....and it seems like my undercarriage is rusting up the same speed as my s-10 cept my s-10 was never garaged kept and my yota is parked in a garage every night....

I'm going against everyone's opinion here, but the Blazer is an okay vehicle depending on the year model. The 96-99 had a few bulletins with the seatbelt bolts and a squeaking noise on the suspension, but the seatbelt is only a bulletin and is not a safety issue or it wouldve been a recall. I would prefer an s-10 truck with the 4.3l engine and the zr2 package. Also can anyone give me the info about the negative stuff you put in? Some of the stuff is opinion based and hearsay and lacks actual proof.

yeah its says he needs better tires or hes not as good of a driver as you.....since getting stuck doesnt have to do much with the engine...

blazer weighs 4000 lbs with a 107 wheelbase....about the same specs as a 2000 4runner....

I'm on your side...I like the Blazers...only problem i have with them is I dont care for the looks too much compared to the newer 4 runners....I wouldnt mind owning one if that was all my price range allowed for....

Yeah as far as the looks department, I love how the 4Runners look in comparison. I just wished the 4Runner would have the engine and tranny as the Blazers did. I've found the newer ones to be more road friendly suspension wise and comfortable compared to my 4Runner. Personally I've only had problems with my '85 Blazer since it had the grossly underpowered 2.8l with a manual 4spd.

blazers are garbage, you will be replacing oil cooler lines, trans cooler lines, upper and lower ball joints idler and pitman before you hit 40K miles. those trucks were the bread and butter of the garage I worked at. Thats where I learned how good the yota's are, I'd be inspecting a 86 corrola and it'd be perfect.
