I am becoming my father

My last eye exam was December if 2001.
I had my 60 day layoff notice from Boeing, so I decided to quickly get new contacts and glasses.

Still wearing the same glasses from back then, but I have not worn the contacts in over two years.
I was not able to wear them at my last job before Boeing, it was to dirty.

Went in today after work and got the eye glasses and contact exam.
Nice to have insurance again, it pays for quite a bit of it.

When sitting in my rocker and watching TV, I will often read a magazine too.
I have to look down through the bottom of my glasses, as with them on it is to blurry.
Same with contacts, to hard to read.

He recommended I get bifocals.
My parents both wore them, and I remember the lines in the middle of the glasses.

Not with these glasses, there will be no line.
Also they are plastic "Transitions" lenses like my present ones, but they have improved them even more to get darker, as if they did not get dark enough now.

This will be cool, I will not be able to read without having to look below the lenses or take them off.

He wanted me to try two different contacts.
One to see far off, the other to read with.
He said the brain trains, and you get use to it.
I passed on that.

Anyone wear bifocals, and is it hard to get use to?

As I type this, my vision is still blurred.
I had a few different solutions put into my eyes which dilated them.

I had bifocals in Jr. high. Got used to them after a month or so. But a year or so later, my eyes changed again....didn't need em....
But it will hapen to everybody eventually, so don't feel too bad Corey.

Not trying to jack your interesting topic but I must complement you on your avatar.

An on the topic at hand. I too wear corrective lenses. I do have contacts but I wear my glasses to work as I'm around an excessive amount of sawdust all day. Much easier to wipe off my glasses than go into the bathroom every 10 min. to flush out my contacts. I know the forman apriciates it.

Which avatar?
I just changed as you posted I think.
I had the NVIDIA one up, now I have my work rig up.

I should be able to wear the contacts at work, as this jitney has windows all around plus doors.

The problem before at my job when I was laid off, and when I drove a forklift at Boeing before my layoff, was that they were open forlkifts, and dirt would often blow up in the eyes.

It has heat and air-con too.
It is a blast to drive, and I spend quite a bit of time in it.

My dad did the thing with the two different contacts. He said it works fine. It just takes a little getting used to.

I might try that down the road, but it just sounds like it would take a lot getting use to, and I gotta have clear precise vision operating my work rig.

I am often around large groups of people who do not keep an eye on their surroundings.

The bottom is my perscription, the top is a bit stronger for close-up work like soldering and whatnot. They drive me NUTS and cause a ton of headaches (and yeah, that's after 2 years).

The biggest problem I have with them is driving... If I'm focused on the car in front of me, then look to my right, technically I should be tilting my head up/down to bring the new object into focus. It sounds like a good idea on paper, but in practice, it's stoopid. If I tilt my head each time my focus changes from near to far, I'd start lookin' like a white boy boppin'!

So, in the end, I don't tilt my head which means my eyes work double time trying to constantly refocus through whichever part of the lens I happen to be looking through at the time. And that means... screaming headaches.

These things were pricey as all getout as well. At the time I was working for that little software company in Redmond, who has a KILLER vision plan. They allot $300/year for glasses - these things on my face blew that by more than a factor of two - $690. _OUCH_. Almost $400 out of pocket, and that came as a surprise when I went to pick them up. My bad of course for not askin' up front, but I had no idea they'd be this much.

So I couldn't help but notice this second line. Is Boeing laying off again? Or are you talking about a past experience?

Steve, that was back in December of '01 when I got my 60 dayer, so I decided to take advantage of my medical and get stuff done.

Mark, my bill yesterday if I did not have Boeing's insurance would have been close to $600.
I got out for about $225, not bad.

I got some pretty nice frames, takes the bill up a lot higher.
They were impressed that my more than 4 year old glasses are in perfect shape, and never been adjusted.

I'm the same way. I take really, really good care of my glasses. NOBODY touches the plastic lenses. I have a 4 year old pair that I still use on a regular basies, and then my pair at work, and I'm getting ready to have work purchase another pair for me. When spending nearly 12 hours a day in front of high resolution screens, good glasses are imperative.

Being an old fart like me sucks. My advice is if you have never had no-line glasses try them. You may adjust better than others. i have lined ones because the transition of looking up and down to find he right area sucked. With lined bi-focals it is alot easier to define the two different strength areas. I have some tri-focals for computor work. My vision is all messed up because I had Cataracts in both eyes and had lens implants done. They are set for medium distance but still need to wear glasses for reading and computor. Just remember it is harder to switch to no-line after you have worn lined ones. Good luck.

Corey,

I've worn bifocal glasses for a couple of years. I have my reading prescription in the bottom and plano in the top. The bifocals keep me from taking my glasses on and off when I walk or talk to others. It took me a while to get used to them, it felt like I had vasoline in my eyes. I just couldn't focus. Now they are just fine.

Good luck with yours. I'm sure you'll get used to them soon.

Janis
