yeah, you just burn the files to a cd, pop in the cd, and the mp3 player plays them. any artist is available, you just have to get the songs on your computer, and then burn them to cd.
but i have a question too. are all the mp3 playsers out there just playing off a cd? are there any yet that have a hard drive so you can store them in the stereo and play em off that?

There are a few units that have their own hard drive, but they're very expensive. This Pioneer Unit is a good example at $1700. The only other I know of is one made by Sony that sells for around $1500.

The hard drive based ones have been around for years. I have two Empeg in-dash MP3 players, also known as Rio Car on the newer models. Unfortunately these units went out of production long ago mostly due to poor marketing strategies on Rio's part but if you see one for sale either snatch it up or let me know cause I certainly will. They're basically a small ARM processor (same as in some PDAs now) based computer running Linux and can contain 1 or 2 2.5" hard drives which means when the 80 gig drives hit the market you'll be able to take 160 gigs (or over 37,000 MP3s) of music with you.
not that you'd ever want or need that much music but it sure sounds cool....

Well, you asked how an MP3 works...
Basically... they are the same as a normal cd... each track is a sound file. Though on an mp3 the music is very compressed. That’s why you can fit 200+songs on an mp3 cd and only 18 on a regular cd. Each file has a different compression (#s like 128, 196 etc) The higher the #, the more information/sec there is which means better sound quality. If anyone tells you their mp3 is CD quality, they are full of poo. They can be close, but no mp3 will sound as good as a real CD. The reason they work is that MP3s start by taking out all the frequencies our ear can't hear, and then the quality goes down from there depending on the compression of the file. Now, you asked if you need a special player to play mp3s. The answer is yes and no. Any burning software these days will have an mp3 to CDA (compact disk audio) converter in it. Meaning it will convert the mp3 to play in any normal cd player. The only thing is you only get the normal 20 +/- songs. Where as on an mp3 cd (non-converted, and requires a special deck) you can fit 200+/- depending on quality. The only thing with that is, I would really recommend you look at and play with the deck before you buy. Having a good interface is extremely important when you have to deal with 200 tracks on one cd. Hope I have helped... if I don't make since or you have any more questions just ask... |
