Time is essential.
Plenty of idiots out there that will trash the vehicle worse than it is, or even steal stuff off of it. Good luck

What are his plans with the 4Runner now? Will insurance cover it or is he taking another route with it?

I'm surprised there isn't more damage to the roof, like a busted sunrood, and the rack all mangled up

Damn glad the guys came out unscathed. My cousin rolled his 4runner (2dn gen) in those hills 5 or 6 years ago and came out unscathed but his runner was way more mangled than that. Wow so lucky
No ones really touched on what to do in a brake failure situation like this. Forgive me if I sound like the devils advocat here but I think this is important. Was that runner a manual or an auto? What about the 'parking' brake? I've actually put my truck through a few simulated tests offroading. Don't wait for something to happen to learn how to react to it. Whilst up in the mountains I try to safely simulate different emergencies. One being brake failure on a steep downward road. Essentially stop using your brakes and react. The parking brake is cable actuated so requires no fluid (sorry if i sound like im talkn to a 3yr old =P) Wrench on it to hard you're gonna lock up the rears and probably crash real quick. If you can react quickly enough, drop the tranny into the lowest gear you can crush it into and grab that parking brake. You'd be surprised you can actually get the truck stopped or slowed down to a safe speed that you can control. However, backing up, if you're in a downward decent you should ultimately have control over the trucks speed almost entirely with the gas pedal and the transmission. If you are controlling the speed with the brakes a lone odds are you're in to high of a gear. In the rare event the brakes give out you're going to pick up speed much much quicker than you might anticipate. Bottom line you gotta be quick. This kind of stuff kinda comes instinctually after you go through any kind of aviation training. The only thing you train for is emergencies by simulating every possible situation you 'might' get into. Something to think about the next time you offroad. Other things you might consider before you're next trip: - Secure ALL things in the cab. EVERYTHING. Anything that someone could grab and crack you in the head with. SECURE IT. In a rollover like this you could easily be seriously injured by something not secured in the cab. Heh, a digital camera to the temple I cant imagine being a good thing! -If you can coast down a hill in a gear, do it. Brakes first and foremost are there to stop the vehicle not to keep it a speed; that, the engine can do. =) -It's also important to secure items outside the vehicle (say in your pickup bed). Besides laws having heavy penalties on state highways for items that might 'fly off or out' of the vehicle it can pretty dangerous when you're offroading and you roll or hit a bump and stuff flies out. *** I figure this is worth a mention to since I've seen it a lot. I know a lot of people who don't use their seatbelt once they hit the dirt. I for one don't use it when I'm crawling in non-steep or cliff like situations. Being jarred around at 5mph on some rocks n logs you learn real quick where you're kidneys are !!! However, I can't stress enough using it in every other situation. When you cant step out of the vehicle when its moving (crawling) then its crucial you strap that thing on. IT does save lives. Also, don't think you can 'jump' out before a rollover... Those are the first things that come to mind before I set out on any trip, be it driving to work or a trip to the mountains for some camping. Get out there and practice, do it in a safe environment. have fun =)
