I use a Kirby. The thing is built like a 60s muscle car, all metal. My wifes family have been using Kirbys for over 50 years. They're not cheap but last forever.

Parents bought a Kirby during the 60s when I was growing up.
Expensive yes, not sure how they compare to modern technology now. A friend of mine has two of the Orek's, he likes his new Dyson with the wheels better.

Hoover Wind Tunnel WITH a bag. We like it best because of the dog and cat hair. :-)

Dyson is overpriced IMHO.
Costco had one that worked with similar technology for like half the price. A friend got one and said it was beyond awesome.

I see mixed reviews on it, but those who own one including my sister swear by them.
Hers is six years old and not the ball type, but she says it is far better than any other she has had. If I get one, I will more than likely order it direct, as they are including a $60 accessory kit with it for a few more weeks.

Some complain the cord is to short on the ball models, and the also do not have a headlight. This better be good, I took the Amazon way out with Saturday shipping for less than $7. I am a Prime Customer with them and have free two day shipping. If I had ordered it yesterday, it would be here Friday for free shipping. Can not complain though for a few bucks more for weekend delivery. Tomorrow is my normal vacuuming day, so one more time with the crappy vac. I can smell the electrical ozone smell when running it, it really is on its last legs. But for the use I gout out of it, it is pretty good. Going to hang onto it though and see about fixing it, but I have been wanting a Dyson for awhile now. Dyson DC 25 Found more info too. There is a wealth of reviews online and YouTube vids too. http://www.vacuumreviewer.com/dyson-vacuum-cleaners/ http://www.vacuumcleanersusa.com/dys...vacuum-cleaner

dyson
So when is dyson going to come out with a built-in version of their whiz-bang super sucker? I like the whole idea of the dyson but personally I prefer to have the noise making parts as far from me as possible... and just think of the CFMs they could pull with a big built in unit... you could pull the threads right out of the rugs lol...

Miele, Bosch, the Germans are good at that sort of stuff. Small, quite, and powerful.

My family has also been using Kirby's for years. My mom bought hers in 1996 with all the attatchments. There have been two things that have broken on it: The belt (a $7 piece, and very easy to replace) and the cord wrap(a $3 piece). She paid $700 or so for it, but it still runs like the day she bought it.
IMO, the Dyson is overpriced, and overhyped. If you're going to spend $500 on a vacuum brand that has been around for 4 or 5 years, why not spend $700 on a brand that has been trusted for 40+ years, and is definitely built to last. With a Dyson, you're buying the name, with a fruity Brittish guy's word to back it up. With a Kirby, you're also buying the name, but with a reputation of reliability to back it up Kirby's also work excellent on hard surfaces, and with pet hair. EDIT: After I wrote this, I realized that you already bought the Dyson... Hope it works like they say it does for year after year

Born & raised in the Netherlands. I know Philips very well. Don't see much of Philips over here though.

A little late as you seem to have bought one, but here's my take. I have a 10 year old Kenmore canister, it was pricey in the day, I bought a new Dyson, not the roller ball, when I had to put my dog down as the Kenmore was kind of musty after all those dog years. Let's just say the Dyson is gone and the Kenmore is still being used. My biggest complaint is using the attachments, you have to remove the handle every time you want to use the crevice tool or duster, to me its a stupid time consuming design. Every other upright I have ever seen has a separate hose for the attachments. As far as power the Dyson is fine, nothing special IMO, and cleaning it is really no big deal. I did find it seems to do only so-so on flat surfaces, such as tile or hardwood. It made me realize I far prefer a canister style vacum and will never buy another upright.

This will be my first upright in 22 years since I have been using canisters since '88.
I will give this Dyson a good workout and see what I think of it. If I end up hating it down the road, there is always Ebay to get rid of it. Not sure if I want to switch back to a canister in the future though. Kind of tired playing tug of war with it and bumping the main unit into walls ect. My Kenmore canister was like top of the line when I bought it 12 or so years ago. One thing is for sure, I will not want to go with bags again. I like the idea of the bagless concept. My sisters Dyson I am not sure if it is an upright or the canister model. And I probably will fix up the old Kenmore later. It is still on the original belt and it looks fine, and the light is still the original bulb too. Bad short in the head unit somewhere though, it keeps cutting in and out when you move the handle back and forth to vacuum. Probably down by where it attaches to the motor unit in the suction head. PS, quite familiar too with Kirbys. Back in the 60s growing up my parents bought the top of the line model with all the attachments from a door to door salesman who spent half the day showing us how it worked. It finally died around '88 when I bought my mother a Eureka canister and I inherited it after she passed away. It worked for a few years until I bought the Kenmore.

FYI Dyson does make a canister vac I have seen them.
There is also the roomba... you can program it to vac-u-suck while you are at work...presto! you come home to a nice clean house... you could even vacuum daily this way...

Seen the Roombas, those are pretty cool.
Perfect timing. Laid down for a nap today (four day weekend for Boeing) and within ten minutes of getting up FedEx was here with the Dyson. You have to snap a few pieces together, but it is easy. A few things I miss from using a canister vacuum: 1. The cord does not coil up into the machine, you wind the cord around the handle, pretty much like every other upright I have owned/used in the past. 2. No headlight, not sure why Dyson neglected to include one, plenty of power to tap into on the head unit. 3. You kind of have to hold the cord in your opposite hand to lift it off the ground so you do not run over it with the big ball or the pickup head. 4. Cord is much shorter, use to plugging it into the wall outlet by the kitchen window. But I have a power strip behind my easy chair that lets it do the whole place without having to replug it in elsewhere. Other than the above, it is nice. Just takes a little getting use to since I have been using two canister vacuums since '88. Kind of cool to see the dirt it is picking up in the clear container.

No matter what brand ....they all suck. (rimshot!)
we had a Fantom for years, bought an updated version, it was too bulky......bought a Bissell at Sam's Club and replaced it with a Eureka from Sam's....figure after awhile it becomes disposeable and likely loses it's effectiveness andwill just replace it with another $50 one......they are all the cyclonic / container (bagless) kind.....very gratifying to see how effective it is. between those vacs and our massive filtration system in our central air / heat (GEO-THERMAL Water Furnace), I feel we have a good grip on things. my $.02.

Why does anybody need a headlight on a vacuum cleaner?
You're not taking it on the road (or maybe you are lol). They (uprights) are too bulky to go under a couch/bed so the room lights/daylight would be enough. Also those lights are pretty ineffective in any case... they only stuck them on there in the first place to enhance the "automotive/space age" styling when they first came out in the "nifty fifties". If you really need/want a headlight Corey just glue a low-profile LED battery powered bicycle headlight on it. That would give you a light that would actually do something other than just glow...just a thought.

Corey,
What kind of attachments come with the Dyson? How many amps is the motor? Can I be bold enough to ask, How much?
