I hate to bump a very old thread, but it seems we have had a rash of posts as of late again that need to have some editing done to them on account of those who try to bypass the sensor and spell out the words in question.
This makes more work for staff when we already have plenty of work to do here.

Not to jump on the wagon, but there's been a handful of "GD's" lately.
I know that many don't consider this offensive, but there are some of us that do. I've tried pointing it out in a non-confrontational way, but I still see it from time to time. My knickers aren't in a bunch over it, but I appreciate not having to read it, FWIW.

Yea, I should be banned. I'm teh worst evar!
![]() I think GD is the worst of our worries. Besides, you can say it on the radio, so it can't be that bad but I am not arguing here, as it does say in the rules no GD's.What about the abbreviation GD? Can i say "GD" or "Emm Eff" instead of the actual words? Just wonderin

I agree with you.
Now I do swear around friends and by myself if I am having a bad day , but I never take the Lords name in vein.I was brought up to not do that, and it irks me when I hear it. Even on TV and in movies it pisses me off. The other words in the movies I can live with.

Anyone see the South Park episode where Cartman freezes himself in the snow because he can't wait three weeks for the Wii to be released? He's unfrozen in the future where everyone is atheistic and instead of the GD they say "Oh my Science!" and "Science D.....!"
It's just a matter of opinion. |

Im offended more at pisses than GD I was brought up around religion too but dont personaly believe in it so the word does not hurt me in any way! if it hurts you Im sorry but its your offence taken to it when others may not take any at all!
I can understand why alot of people dont want the swearing on here(and obiding by the rules) Yes! "My personal opinion" is that if you dont want to hear, say or read the word than ignore it! cause we live in a world now, good or bad that I cant walk down the street without hearing a so called "Vulger" (Its vulgar if interpurate it that way!) word every few minuets. Its sad but so true and I cant see it stopping ever in my lifetime here on earth! I will though stop here just cause of rules. I have multiple thoughts about this entire thread! But I will play by the rules set from the beginning! Just My opinion on the whole matter. you can agree or disagree take offence or whatever. I dont really care just my stand on it!

Before we start sniping at each other over what each of us finds offensive let's just stop now. The standard potty language is of course unacceptable and the GD thing bothers a lot of folks, myself I have no problem with it [though I try to make sure not to use it around kids], I have a few friends whom it bothers greatly so I try to avoid it there as well. I think if we all try to frame our speech around how we would speak in front of our grandparents no one will get "hurt".
of course some of us have grandparents who cuss like a marine drill instructor but you all know what I mean LOL...

It is specifically noted in the forum rules so personal offensiveness to different cursings and their levels is irrelevant. It is against the rules period.

Look - I am not upset that people swear. You can come over to my house and swear all you want (as long as my wife isn't home), and I'll watch football with you and laugh at your jokes. I just think it's important that there is an understanding that not everyone wants to emulate the Osborn family, and that our language has ramifications in life. It's how we interact with each other, and it shows our level of respect for the person we're interacting with. (btw, when "pisses" is perceived as more offensive than the "F" word, pop culture has taken a pretty bad turn)

Exactly the point I was trying to make guys and at the same time provide a guideline for everyone on what might be considered off-colour outside of the "standard" cuss words.

Having read through this thread again, I have a few thoughts...
It is true that offensiveness is relative, to some degree. It is true that in the society we inhabit, vulgarity is the norm, to a growing degree. However, I do find it interesting that if I were to express certain personal views regarding particular social trends that were based on my theological beliefs, it is quite probable that I would be accused of offense. However, when expressing my own offense at certain words, words that are generally accepted to be offensive, there is an attitude taken by some of "just deal with it." My point of view is essentially not tolerated, when at the same time, I am told I need to tolerate other views that run counter to my own. Why does the sword not swing both ways? I understand the summation that Wabbit gave, and I think it suffices in expressing the point of the moderators of this forum, but at the same time, I find the broader contradiction interesting, and it seems that the direction of this thread has taken a course that has less to do with specific forum rules, and more about an interesting direction our society has taken, as well as discussion of what is offensive and what is not. That, in effect, is what I am speaking to.

I think CJ that what some people were saying is that cursing is now common place and that we should all just live with it. Not so much people's point of view being tolerated or not. Personally society may be going to "heck" in a hand-basket [lol] but we don't have to help it along the way.
I agree also that this thread seems to have drifted off topic. We may lock it down the arguement is becoming circular...

I do think that a discussion of the relativity of offensiveness within a forum must inevitably turn to the relativity of offensiveness in society in general, as a forum board often is simply a microcosm of that society. That being said...

Not sure how this thread got resurrected from the archives but here is my two cents on the matter:
YT tries to provide what I consider to be a family acceptable atmosphere. I like it when one of my kids over looks my shoulder to look at what some folks are doing to their trucks. They are not allowed to look over my shoulder if I am on ttora.com or Pirate PBB. If someone feels the need to GD it, etc..try ttora, there is an accepted level of cussing there. If you feel the need to take it up a notch or two higher, you can do that on Pirate BB, the flip off smiley is considered a nice sign over there... I really like the friendly atmosphere of YT...sure some of the same questions get asked 50x's a week and that gets kind of annoying: how do I fit 33's on my stock truck?..but that comes with the territory. The mod's on any forum have got it tough monitoring what is more than likely very time consuming and not even paid...Hat's off to them for the work they put in here...

Oh you find my language offensive, just ignore it. Thats almost like saying, "does my second hand somke bother you, oh well just ignore it." Not only is excessive swearing offensive but it usually shows a lack of intelligence. Granted there are plenty of smart people I know that do swear, but it it rarely dominates there vocabulary. Using other adjectives makes one appear much more intelligent. So lets take this as an opportunity to add to our vocabulary and use more intelligent speach.
And also let me just say that I am not perfect and I do swear from time to time but usually only if I do something like smash my finger with a hammer or hurt myself etc or if I get really frusterated. It is not a part of my normal vocabulary.
