Grand Cherokee fuel pump replacement

Anyone ever done one?

My brother has a newer (between 96 and 2001, just not sure) JGC. It wouldn't start yesterday, and he said he couldn't hear the fuel pump kick in with the key in the On position.

The Jeep dealer is quoting something like $800, because they say Jeep won't warranty the pump unless it is replaced as a unit, with a new tank, etc.

I think that is a crock and am wondering how hard it would be to do ourselves. I'll be back there a week from today.

The filter is also a possibility and that will be replaced first anyway.

I tried searching jeepsunlimited.com. Of course I had to register before I could search. And even after registering, I still have to wait for an admin to "review and authorize my account" before I can search....

Im sure it will be "fun" just like all other in-tank pump replacements. Alot of that cost could possible be just the pump itself. Ive seen assy's sell for $400-500. Alot of the newer vehicles are sender, pump, and strainer all in one. Good Luck

p.s. makes me glad I drive a tercel. My mech. pump went out in a parking lot one time. I came back over the next day with a new pump ($30) and had it on and running within 5 minutes. 2 bolts & 3 hoses.

Tom - Search here. Little more mature crowd here and all dedicated to JGC's. I have a 2000, BTW. The old body style was up to 98. New body is 99+. I'm sure the tanks are different between the gens. Don't know much else about it though.

Try looking for the fuel pump relay and make sure it's working properly. It could be as simple as that.

Thanks for that link Mike. The relay is a good one too, I'll suggest that to my brother.
