Gps

does GPS have a monthy cost of some kind? my friend is getting a new Trans Am after he totaled his first one (RIP Cassidy) due to a stuck throttle. The speedometer only goes up to 80, but he can pass that relativly fast. i told him about Steve's GPS unit and how it tells the realtime speed, and he was very interested.

also.. steve, if you see this, can you point me in the direction of your GPS unit?

No, there is no fee, the government got something right. If your friend wants a gps for actual gps functions, like finding places doing geocaching etc, then the minimum I would get is the garmin legend (that's mine). It only has 8 megs of memory which is only enough room for about 1 map uploaded from the CD. 1 map is good for all of SF, but not for LA. I wish I had gotten the vista that tom has...it has more memory.

I don't know anything about the magellens though.

24 MB baby!!

Actually the only real reason I got it was b/c I was able to get in on that rebate, and also use up Cabela's points. Otherwise it may have been a bit too expensive.

Yep Joey, I got mine about a week after you got yours!

Corey, I got mine through Cabelas - they list it as regular price $349, on sale for $299. I'm sure that price will be good till spring, as it was listed in their big fall catalog.

Garmin had a $50 rebate a few months back, which made it even more attractive. Between that and my Cabelas points, I was able to get one for a little under $200.

Steve said they run rebates on the etrex models fairly regularly, so if you're not in a hurry, I'd hold out for that.

I just bought my dad a Magellen Meridian Platinum. That thing is sweet!! Its only got 16mb, but if he needs more memory he can always buy a card. Its got pretty much everything on it stock!

To answer original question, there is not monthly fee.

No, the legend and the Vista do not have expandable memory, nor can you add an external antenna. But, I believe you can add a signal re-sender which basically takes the signal from an external antenna and sends it to the gps. This is in contrast to the higher end gps's which have an available plug in antenna. I'd assume the plug in antenna's work better.

The legend is OK and does everything the Vista does (pretty much). If you're going to be using it for long trips then you better have a laptop with you so you can upload the maps as drive. If you're on a budget then the legend is ok, but if you afford it, then splurge for the vista.

Also look into the magellens, they have expandable memory.

Haha, me too. I'm lost without my gps now and that's not a good thing. www.geocaching.com has some message boards you can do research on. If I were to do it again I would research the magellans more because their screens are bigger. I don't know anything about their interface or their functions though.

Hmmm...with you living near LA you might want to go for the larger memory. I believe the map on the CDrom for LA is split up into (3) 8 meg maps which means if you travel around the city you might need all 24 megs to navigate all of LA. The legend won't do that.
