Gas in the Oil?

Other than a bad float, what can cause gas to get in the engine oil?

And is it possible for an engine that has no float problems (MPI) and that runs smoothly with plenty of power to get gas in the oil?

If there was gas in the oil how would you know it? Smell? Separation upon drainage?

I am suspicious of there being gas in the oil of one of my Vehicles...only from the smell of the oil once it has been in the engine...it is not an overbearing gas smell...and my nose may be off a bit...but I am trying to figure out how it could have gotten there (if it is there at all).

if its enough you could smell it. i flooded my engine pretty bad and i drained the oil and it smelled badly of gas.

btw i pulled the dipstick and could smell the gas on it through the oil

I thought I was smelling it, but know I am beginning to think I am imagining it.

I had a bad carb on my Jeep and it failed emissions...it now has the MPI (fuel injection) kit on it, and should not be flooding. I thought it smelled like gas before, and now I have changed the oil twice and I think it is in my head! Guess I will find out at the emissions test, eh.

Explanation
As an engine runs, gases from the cylinders leak past the piston's sealing rings into the crankcase (containing the crankshaft and other parts). This leaked gas is sometimes referred to as "blow by" because the pressure within the cylinders "blows" them "by" the piston rings. If allowed to remain in the crankcase, or become too concentrated, the harmful compounds will condense out of the air within the crankcase and form corrosive acids and sludge on the engine's interior surfaces. To keep the crankcase air as clean as possible, some sort of ventilation system must be present.

Clogged PCV system, or leaky rings?

Sounds possible you could be accumulating blow by in your oil, either from lack of ventilation or worn piston rings. You should check your compression to make sure it ain't your rings. Unless you suspect it's a PCV issue. Still wouldn't hurt to check it anyway if you can.

That is one of the things I had figured might cause gas in the oil, but wouldn't the engine suffer from power loss or run poorly if there was a loss of compression? That is what is puzzling...it runs great and has lots of power.

The PCV system is brand new since the MPI kit replaces all of its components. However it could still have a little residual from the old system.

I am going to take it for the emissions test as soon as I replace the tailpipe...if it fails, or has a high hydrocarbon reading I will test the compression next.
