Free memory, how do I get more?

Thats my problem. I keep getting a message everytime I try to defrag. It says that I don't have enough free memory to run the progam. How do I get more free memory or get back memory?

Quit trying to learn new things.
Everytime I learn something new I forget something. When I was learning all the FDIC and FCUA insurance guidelines and Federal banking regs, I forgot where I lived.

Seriously, though, shut down any programs you have running in the background. QuickTime is a nasty one on my system. McAfee is, too. Any anti-virus, firewall, media players, etc., eat up a lot of memory if they just sit in your task panel. Shut those down and run your defrag again.
You might also clean your registry. www.downloads.com has a lot of registry cleaners to choose from. You can download them and try them for free for 30 days.

I learned this one while installing a big ol' program. It is for Windows XP. I'm no guru, so I don't know what the implications are if this messes up. If your computer breaks, this info didn't come from me! It basically turns off all the Startup programs and then has you reboot so nothing is running in the background. Windows will run in some sort of "troubleshooting" mode because it recognizes that nothing is running that usually is or something. Do your business and then go back and turn all the Startup stuff back on. It goes like this:

Goto Start Menu -> Run and type "msconfig"
Goto the "Startup" tab
Click "Disable All"
Reboot the computer.

when it comes back up it should have no programs running in the background. when you're done, repeat the above steps but click "enable all". The original instructions I read this from said to actually write down everything that was running, and then enable those programs when your done. But I just did the disable and enable all feature.

boot to safe mode. in win9x, that is preferred anyways since you dont have all sort of other apps taking control over your HD.

if you have 2000/xp, convert your drive to NTFS, if you havent yet. then defrag in SAFE MODE also... (when booting hit the F8 key)
