Even tho' I'm not a Vancouver fan and am an Avs fan I don't think he should be charged criminally,it should be handled by the league which he still is indefinetly suspended. The punishment was handled well by the league and IMO he should be able to return when Steve Moore returns.

I'm not a hockey fan but personally I think he should be charged. It was an unprovoked surprise attack that led to some pretty serious injuries. Any way you look at it the guy is a thug - people getting into a fight under the guise of sports as long as they know it's coming is totally different from coming from behind.

I'm not a Nuck fan by any means...and after watching Bertuzzi put the Blue's Jackman out for the season...I dont like him much at all. However, injuries are part of the sport. Getting pissed off is part of the sport. Cheap shots are part of the sport. This one went bad...although I really dont think it was all that bad of a hit in the first place...he just hit him in the wrong spot (or right depending upon how you look at it). Anyway, I think he should be playing next season and the whole criminal action is a joke IMOP. You shouldnt selectively choose when to charge someone with assault. Assault happens every 5 seconds in hockey.

Im sure the hockey God's are pissed off about this...

Injury is part of sports, especially Hockey - yes I understand that, BUT if I remember the clip correctly, the guy wasn't doing anything at the time. He was just skating and then sucker punched - he didn't have the puck, did he?

If I were playing any game and was in possession I would expect to be hit. I wouldn't be expecting a hit as I was walking away or watching someone else make a play. That's my point.

I dunno, maybe he was in possession, I don't remember the clip all that well.

My point is that if Moore wasnt injured...it would have been a normal part of hockey. Reed Lowe goes after guys all the time without them knowing. Same with Vandenbush, Probert, Nash, and various other fighters and instigators. The aftermath of Bertuzzi's was very unfortunate. Yes, he screwed up...but still this stuff has happend before, but there was minimal injury...nothing much more than a few game suspension has come out of them.

In hockey you can never not expect to be hit. The puck can come your way in a split second and WHAM you can get nailed. You should expect not to be puched in the back of the neck...and that's why I say it was very unfortunate for Bertuzzi. If he hit him in just about any other place...Bert would be playing next season. Unfortunately for Moore and Bert...Bert is a enormous fella and a hailmaker landed in the worse spot.

Yeah...he probably meant to hurt him but not nearly as much as he did...it's hockey though. happens.

Like I said, I don't watch hockey so maybe it's expected... do you guys think that in light of this incident things should change? Or do you guys think that it's okay?

Sorry Peter...didnt mean to make that seem deragatory at all. I just love talkin hockey.

I think it should change back to the Gordi Howe days where he had 2 guys in headlocks...

I like it rougher than it is today. If you look at the types of injuries that occur...they are mostly where pads and protection arent (wrists, eyes, back of knees). Other than shoulder/back injuries that occur in any contact sport...I wouldnt say that it's really not that bad. I love hockey because there are so many different roles that require different abilities. I think if you take away a lot of the "violence"...you will take away a lot these roles and a lot of the players. The rules will become strickter and strickter...to the point where it's figureskating meet's curling.

I think the players need smaller salaries, more heart, more intensity, and more desire to win. Hockey needs Rivalries! What better way to create rivalries than big hits, an injury, and a few fights...Detroit-Avs?

The charges are legitamate, I believe, and he needs to stand trial for his actions. It wasnt just some little cheesy hit like the ones that happens in other sports. This was a premeditated attack, (killed that big word), Go back to the last time the two teams played, and look up the quotes he had afterwords. I dont think he tried to do all the damage that he did, but he needs to be held accountable for what he did do.
Justice to me will be, he can go back to playing hockey on any level, as soon as Moore does.

nah, didn't take it as derogatory
I don't know hockey so I'm thinking maybe I should keep my big mouth shut

I was just alarmed at the extent of the guy's injuries and everyone saying that it's normal hockey.

Being one of the taxpayers that will have to pay for this trial I think it's totally ridiculous. Let Bertuzzi come back when Steve Moore returns, he'll end up losing a lot more in salary than any punishment from the courts here.
I was watching the news last night and the crown counsel said the 2 things they look for when deciding whether to press charges are
1. reasonable chance of conviction
and
2. it's in the best interests of the public.
Well #1 seems iffy and as for #2 how is it in the best interests of the public to spend thousands on a trial for some guy who is really no danger to the public. It's not like Bertuzzi's walking down the street assaulting people at random, and needs to be locked up for our safety.

Ill agree with that Red, good call. No need to waste money on a trial. But letting them come back at the same time would be a great standard to set for the future, when it comes to these types of situation.

Ok,so Bertuzzi is on trial, where do you draw the line in hockey? Are you gonna press criminal charges for instigation of a fight or cheap shotting somebody into the boards? I think the Marty McSorely thing was different cause he used his stick as a weapon.

Worst that will happen to him will be a fine and probably some community service, perhaps some anger management classes or stupid crap like that. He won't go to jail for it. No big deal but fitting punishment for the crime, relativly minor as it was.

I agree with PoBoy. Those hits happen quite often, but fotunately not usually with these results. I am convinced that Todd never meant to injure Steve to that extend.

But he did intend on inflicting some sort of damage since it wasn't a spur of the moment thing,he did follow him around the ice with enough time to think about it.
