Fix for the "IE Missing Images" bug

Okay, I'm pretty sure I found the fix for this maddening problem. It involves editing the registry, but if you follow the directions explicitly, you won't have any problems.

1. Click Start\Run
2. Type in "regedit" without the quotes. Click Ok.
3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler
4. Delete the http and ftp keys, leave the mk key alone
5. Close Regedit
6. Reboot
7. Done

This seems to only affect IE 6 SP1 and later.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

G

EDIT: You should notice faster page loading after doing the above.

EDIT #2: I should have made this post more relevant. Here's the original thread about this bug.

I do believe you figured it out, Sherlock Holmes! Still testing, but I haven't had any missing images yet/so far.

Cool deal. It has totally fixed the issue for me. I am pretty sure this is the complete fix. It has to do with browser extensions and 3rd party applications messing up the way IE works.

Peace!

The problem occured on other websites for me, not just YotaTech.

Do you have GetRight or other "Download Managers" installed? That kind of crap is one thing that causes the problem. Check the registry location again to make sure nothing put those keys back in place. If they're back, remove them again.

The problem for me has been completely cured. I don't use those types of programs. I've never found them necessary. However, FTP programs can cause this issue as well. Those keys may or may not be there in the first place when you install IE 6 SP1. It is the existence of them that causes the problem.

If the keys have returned, then maybe it'd be a good idea to run a Registry Monitoring tool like RegMon from Sysinternals. You can use it to figure out what program is modifying those keys. Sysinternals has lots of excellent, highly useful programs like RegMon.

Hope this helps.

Well I'll try it when I get to my work machine next week too. At home I use DAP & FlashFXP. At work I don't use a download accelerator & I use SmartFTP instead of FlashFXP.

I think IE for me is just cursed. I'll keep you posted.

Removed the keys a second time on my work machine & they have not come back. IE seems to be working great at work. My home machine is still image-less but I think it's because I use Download Accelerator at home. I use Opera at home mostly anyway though.

Thx Dr. Z!
