Finally got pulled over in the Yota

I've been pretty used to attracting cops in my previous cars (turbo Eclipse, MX-6 w/nitrous, 240SX, 5.0 Stang, all had exhaust and were loud) But I've had my truck for almost a year now, and one of the things I enjoy so much about it is that I can't do anything stupid in it because of how slow it is. So I hardly ever speed, and from what I can see (and been told) trucks don't really attract attention from law enforcement.

Today I went out to get some parts for a car that belongs to a customer (I work in a body shop) and as I am driving past a gas station, a county cop is sitting there, and starts to look closely at me as I'm driving by (30-35mph). It was pretty close to rush hour, and I was on a busy road, so the traffic was heavy.

As soon as I drive by him, he pulls out right behind me, cutting of the car that was following me in the process, and pulls me over.

I pull over, and I'm thinking to myself "what the hell did I do? I wasn't speeding, tailgating, ect..." The only thing I thought he could of noticed was that I wasn't wearing my seatbelt, or that my front windows were too dark (20% tint)

When he came up to my door, he said that he stopped me for not having a front tag (looks much cleaner without it) and proceeds to waste a good 10 minutes of our time by giving me a written warning. And he didn't even say anything about my tint, or not wearing a seatbelt. So I went on my way.

Oh yeah, it was also raining pretty hard. Now I'm just wondering, why the hell would a cop pull over a truck (not a "rice rocket") for not having a front tag when it's raining?

I'm not complaining about him "doing his job" or anything, but seriously, doesn't he have something better to do?

And does anybody know if you can get pulled over for having your rig lifted with big tires? (33's)

From what I've read on this board, I belive that "Tacomadude" is a cop, so maybe he can tell me something about this that I don't know.

All coments/flames welcomed

The sportcar/truck thing is true with cops. I go 70 down a 60 mph highway all the time and cops dont even radar me or stare at me or nothin. But when im driving the same route in my dads mustang all the cops gun me or stare me down, and i have to go the speedlimit.

Pulled over, bout time, errr sorry for your bad luck :)

Well well well look who got nailed or atleast tapped. I am not going to flame you but rub it in just a lil. When that officer pulled in behind you he was grabbing your tag number and having dispatch run your rig. It came back to you I suppose and your record appeared. Here is where it got good. I can only imagine what all dispatch reported to the Officer. Your rig may now be on the hot sheet. Meaning he has put 1 & 1 together figuring out you drive such and such cars and now this Toyota rig. You are owned! Have a nice day.

All depends on the state you're in. Some states are very picky about things like that. Colorado (with the exception of the People Republik of Boulder) could generally care less.

Am I a cop? No, but I work for a police dept. and have a deep appreciation for the crap they have to deal with as some of it does trickle my way.

Your tint and lack of seatbelt are things the cop could have cited you for but probably decided to let go. You must have been cooperative... that's good to hear. Like I posted in the other thread - if you're pulled over everything you have that is illegal is fair game despite whether or not you "know" about it.

You're lucky he "wasted" your time for a warning and not an official citation.

I'm suprised he bothered you in the rain about a front license plate. Oh well, you got off with a warning so it's no biggie. At least he got soaked and you didn't. If I were him, I wouldn't have even bothered with you because I don't want to get wet.

Here in Texas just because you are in a truck doesn't really matter to the police. It's better than a sports car but they still get them. I don't know how old you are but it seems some police officers will pull over someone for being young. You know what I mean. They see the person is young and then pull them over for some minor traffic violation. Yes I know, it's still a traffic violation and someone has to enforce it yada yada yada...

Don't get me wrong, I respect the police for the job they do. I guess I've just heard of too many unwarranted negative contacts with them.

I guess when I'm old they won't bother me much anymore.

If your state requires a front plate, get a front plate. Tell the judge about how it "looks cleaner" without a front plate.

If you break the law be prepared to face the consequences.

In the meantime, Quityerbitchin.

They are saving the tint and seatbelt issues for when they really want to piss you off. Don't push it. Comply with the law.

There's no way in hell that he could of ran my tag before he pulled me over, he hit his lights literaly 5 seconds after he pulled out.

I'm sure he found out what my driving record looks like (I have 2 points, licence in MD gets taken away at 12 points)

And I'm not bitching btw

He pulled you over as soon as you went by and he saw the MD tag on the back. Having a front plate displayed is the law in MD. He didn't need anymore reasons than that. Just put the plate on the dashboard showing in the front windshield, that way it is displayed in the front of the vehicle and you are obeying the law and still having a "clean look".

And your licence is taken away at 12 pts., but when you get 8 total, or receive 3 tickets (any variety) in 90 days. Your licence is suspended and you have to go to a MVA hearing in front of a MVA judge (1 on 1, no one else there) who can take away your licence for as long as they fell neccesary.

Remember driving is a privilege, not a right.

"and from what I can see (and been told) trucks don't really attract attention from law enforcement. "

Tell that to my friend who just got back his licence, he had so many tickets they took it from him and gave him a red licence where he could only drive to and from work and to pick his boys up from school and mothers.

Of course it doesn't help that he has a GMC Duramax with over 600hp and 1000 ft/lbs of torq.,and does 0-60 in about 6sec. most of the time he is pulling a 20ft box trailer and they still pay close attention to him. They must just hear him and know it's him.

have you guys seen that commercial where that guy goes in to the doctor and the doc asks how ling has it been this way? His reply is "just a couple of days since i got my new car" I don"t know even what kind of car it was but his foot was all lead!

Colorado has the front plate law too and I never had one on my Eclipse the 8 years I owned it;I did however get 14 speeding tickets in 8 years and never had the lack of a plate mentioned once,I guess they figured speeding was enough of a ticket.

If he pulled you over in the rain for that, he's a rookie. In fact, it's practically the definition for rookie. LOL

I got pulled over in the Celica for not having a front plate. The strange thing is that I had my 94 Ranger for 5 years and never got pulled over for that.

I think that the cops here target sports cars and compact cars. I never see a minivan pulled over and those are the worst drivers!

I don't have a front plate, mostly because there is no good place on the ARB.

The only issue I have had, this is taking the truck all over from Wiscosin, to Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, was a woman at a gas station in Colorado would not let me pump gas until I was positioned at the pump in such a way that the camera could see my rear tag.

It is amazing what people get away with in Colorado. I got gas in Montrose and was parked between two pure tube buggies that had just drove in off the street.

Cops do an important job. Don't piss them off. Everyday they have to decide if they should exercise deadly force, pretty serious IMHO.
