Diesel Turbo Information

Anyone who is familiar with diesels chime in.
What kind of power or boost lag difference is there between twin turbo's and single turbos? Is there more useable power between one or the other. I would think twin's would lag waaayyy more than a single turbo meaning slower off the line but pull further in the revs because of more boost? Anyway I'm just curious, my friend is looking into twins and I can't figure out why.
I've looked online and can't come up with hardly any info. I'll probably have to stop at the local diesel shop and go bug the techs.
thanks

Twins spool up faster, signifignatly faster if he is burning enough fuel for them. Depending on the setup, they will also tow nicer with more boost where you need it. Not to mention the potential to make a lot more power. It will help lower EGT's as well by getting more air in quicker, before they have a chance to climb. I assume he is considering them for the Cummins, check out TDR and you will learn alot.

Thanks for the headsup joez, I tried the turbo diesel registry however I thought I couldn't search the links because I do not subscribe to their magazine. hmmm I need to go back and re-check that site.

sequental twin turbos like the RX7 or the supra will spool up VERY fast because one turbo is small that spins up fast and that accualy gets bypassed for the bigger turbo when it spins up.

You can have both turbos running at one time if the wasgate on the smaller turbo doesn't open which is GREAT for towing.

twin turbo setups are great but can't yeild as much power as a single MASSIVE turbo.
many of the drag racer's with supras opt for a single turbo conversion to run more boost

Not true. While on gassers this is how it is, most of the high power diesel guys are running way more boost than 99.9% of gassers could even dream of. Richard (maddog, the one video that has been circling the internet for a year or so now with him smoking an RX7)) was running right arround 100 psi of boost with twins to get his lifted, cummins powered crew cab ford into the low 11's, and there are many other people pushing boost numbers up there as well. Singles are only good for about 30-45 psi reliably for daily driving/towing, and even that has noticeable lag and higher EGT's than a Twin setup pushing the same boost. There are people who push their singles higher, but usually they are battling EGT's that constantly want to push over 1300 degrees with the blink of an eye.

yes on gassers it is true...disels push out loads more exhaust and can run more MUCH more boost than a gsoline engine for one important reason

no spark plugs!

yep, air is free when you have a diesel, no such thing as preignition!
