I think the article sums it up well....shooting is extreme but the boyfriend is not without blame here, but neither is the daughter either...

Murder isn't justice for your daughter's pride or virginity;it takes two to tango and now the dad won't be around for his daughter when she really might need his help.
People gotta think before they act and that guy had time after he beat the kid with the pool cue.

I understand a dad's reaction but now his whole family will suffer for it. I would have beaten the kid sensless but I know unless a family member's life was threatened I wouldn't kill somebody.

regardless of consent, etc. the father did not have the right to shoot the kid.

the father is to blame in this one 100%. the kid and the daughter were consentual.

The daughter is only 17, so she is not old enough to legally consent (at least in most states). Whether she has the authority to permit the boyfriend on the premises (making him not trespass), is up to the courts.
Granted, shooting the kid is a gross overreaction, but I can only imagine how angry the father must have been when he already outlined the rules to the kids and they willfully go behind his back. I can't wait to be a parent!

Well the kid din't die but they think he will be paralyzed forever.

I thought I would wait a while before casting my vote.

As a father of 2 little girls I understand he felt upset and betrayed, both by his daughter and the boyfriend. That said I would not have shot through a door my daughter was behind. I may have gotten the shotgun out (no ammo) and let him hear that sweet sound the 'ol 870 produces when you slide that baby home. I think that would be more that enough to scare the crap out of a 17 year old kid.

I wonder when Fuster is going to chime in on this tale of gunplay.

16 is the legal consent age in most states, including AR and FL.

And he was 19 if I remember correctly. So either way, sexually consenting is the important thing here. Regardless of trespassing, the father is totally in the wrong. And yes, that was wreckless endangerment of his own daughter.

well let this be a lesson learned to any of our members that are teens still Respect your girlfriends fathers wishes or you may never get laid again.

personally I would have beat the crap out of the kid he was told not to come over and he did consenting or not it is his house and he and his wife pay to live there not there kid so until she lives on her own she has to play by her parents rules.

I think here in Indiana 16 is the consenting age but if you are under 18 and have sex with some one over 18 it is stachatory rape, and from what I have gathered it is the same in most states.

I can also see why the father was pissed off his daughter has her whole life in front of her and the last thing he wants is her getting knocked up, before she even has a chance at bigger things then raising a kid at 17.

Sorry, what I meant is that he's an adult, and she's not, creating a statutory rape situation (at least in many places) - like CyMoN stated. Another point to be made is that a father has the right to protect his minor daughter from a perceived threat, like a sex-hungry adult male, so consent is not the only issue. Don't get me wrong, nothing good happened at all in this story. If the kids hadn't gone behind dad's back, he wouldn't have gotten the gun. If dad hadn't gotten the gun, this wouldn't be news.
