Wow that sucks.
Looks like the Steelers may be looking for a QB. Jake Plummer might make a good trade...

I hope he's ok... obviously I'm far from a Steelers fan, but he's a talented young guy, and it'd be sucky if he lost the chance to use his gifts.
That said, he's a complete idiot for not wearing a helmet. From the reports, he would be basically fine besides a minor knee injury, with a helmet on. As of now, b/c he thought it was "fun" to ride without a helmet, they're having to call in a plastic surgeon.

It doesn't matter if you're the safest if the drivers around you aren't.

Tragic event.
My uncle used to own a Harley Davidson dealership along w/ Kawasaki's, probably more than 20 years ago and his favorite saying to folks when asking about what kind of helmet to buy was... "If you got a ten dollar head, but a ten dollar helmet." When I rode I had a $500 helmet and that was 20 years ago...and it saved my noggin on more than one occasion...although some would argue I'm dain bramaged. ![]() Be a real man and wear a helmet, if for no one else but the people who love you. I agree with williemon...morons don't wear helmets.

it's natural selection. if you want to live to reproduce, you'll wear a helmet. Though, people still reproduce that wear helmets, just not as many.
It's too bad to see such a talented person, or anyone for that matter, get hurt, but I don't have much pitty for anyone who doesn't wear a helmet. |

I hope he recovers, but like we've been saying at work, I bet he wouldn't play football without a helmet. I've taken 3 spills on a motorcycle. One on the street, two on the race track. A good helmet and a leather suit has saved my ass from serious injury. The only thing that cracks me up more than people not wearing helmets is not wearing gloves. If you wreck a motorcycle and think you're not gonna bang up your hands, you're retarded. I bet it sure is hard to wipe your butt when all the skin on your palms is burnt off.

I find thats its usally the "posers" that don't wear helmets. The guys that are out there to just look cool, and have really never had much seat time. I was rasied that you don't get on unless you got your brain bucket.

Anyone who gets on one of those organ doner cycles (like a Busa) and fails to at least wear a minimum of full leathers and a helmet unfortunately has a lesson to be learned (perhaps the hard way as Ben has). I do hope he recovers well though since the NFL needs his talents badly.

Even millionairs are subject to the laws of natural selection. Youthful shortsightedness only enhances one's chances of being left without a chair when the music stops.

I'm not a sports fan, so I don't give a damn if this idiot plays football again, but he's supposed to be some kind of role model so what kind of careless message does this send to kids?

I don't think any athlete should be presumed to be a role model unless he publicly declares that and uphold positive behavior but most athletes should not be viewed that way since look at what the role model landscape is littered with and college ahtletes aren't much better.

I've never understood states that have no law requiring the use of a helmet on a motorcycle yet require the use of a seatbelt in an automobile.
It bothers me.

Many athletes have clauses in their contract about doing high risk activities - wish his did.
The bike was a Suzuki Habayusa - http://pashnit.com/bikes/hayabusa.htm He was not going fast - an idiot pulled right in front of him. I know right where this happened - have had a close call myself at that same intersection (in a car though). The speculation is that he will be a go by the beginning of the season. The laundry list of injuries includes: crushed sinus cavity and nose, two teeth gone and more chipped, broken jaw, 9" gash on back of head, superficial injuries (cuts/bruises) to both knees. I hope he heard this wake up call. Terry Bradshaw was criticizing BR for riding w/o a helmut a while ago - odd way for Bradshaw to look like a genius.
