Been looking at Chain Saw's?

Well, bought 3 acres +/- 18 months ago and this summer I plan on cleaning up the area a bit, clearing out some trees, cutting up ans removing the fallen trees. The sizes range from small to big and figured a 18 inch bar on a saw would do the job. I think I narrowed it down to 2 saws and wanted to see what everyone thought or if you had another option let me know! (not dynamite or gas/match). I was looking at these:

Stihl Farm Boss:

Husqvarna 55 Rancher:

STIHL all the way.
Husky's are good, but I am currently using my father-in-laws 25 year old stihl. Works like it is brand new.
You will pay a premium, but it will be the only chainsaw in that size you ever need to buy again

only one word you need to know in the chainsaw world: STIHL.

the farm boss is a good saw, and i'm personally quite fond of the MS360 PRO. it works great with a 20" bar, but it'll work fine with something as big as a 28" bar as well! and these saws are on the shelf in our rental yard, they hold up just dandy with all the abusive customers.

my dads friend owns 'sugarloaf cordwood' in big-bear and does chainsaw carvings etc. he has many saws and the stihl's are his favorite.

i have experience with both and say the stihl is the best. the husqvarna is a high-revving low torque engine, which makes it easy to go through small stuff, but when you hit the big logs it just boggs down. the stihl is much slower but has gobs of torque and will not stall when going through the tough stuff. my dad has a 25-30 year old stihl farm boss that's cut a tri-axle load of wood every year and it's still going strong. the only problem is that it's hard to find parts for it now.

As indicated above, Stihl has some loyal followers, so I can only assume they are good, because I have never had one. But, I will vouch for a Husqvarna. When I was in the tree business, I have run them all day long without any problems. It too will serve you well. As a matter of fact, I have the same model in your picture. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Stihl. If the deadwood has been on the ground awhile take an extra chain or at least some files with you-it'll dull a heck of a lot quicker than it does on newer deadfall and live trees.

I dont think Ryobi makes chainsaws.
Ive got a Stihl 021 and I havent managed to break it yet.
Untill Honda starts making chainsaws (if they make one that runs like my Honda trimmer does, wow), I'll stick with Stihl.

I have the husky 55 rancher, and I really like it. I've used stihl as well and just chose the husky because it seems to have less vibration than the stihls I used. I haven't had any power loss while cutting anything bigger than the bar. Just always keep enough bar oil in and chain tensioned.

Stauy away from Echo - I had a landscape business for 8 years and have fallen a couple hundred trees personally. I have used a number of differing saws and the best by far is STIHL. I usually used a 14" because it is small enough for limbing and big enough to get through most trees around here, I could one hand it when needed. I wouls also use an 18" for the larger jobs but the 14" was and still is my favorite. I have the old 017. It has seen at least a hundred trees (60-80') spruce and is still going strong. I use it all the time at the cabin still

I don't know where you are looking to buy, but I priced my Husqvarna at Lowe's and later bought it off eBay much cheaper. It was new and was a display model from Lowe's-even has a Lowe's sticker on it. Paid about $100.00 less than what Lowe's wanted.

I have run Stihl's and Husqvarna's for days on end. Both are nice saws.

If you really plan to use it hard and cannot fix/mess with it yourself, pic the saw from the place that can be there to get parts and take care of it for you.

Anything except the above is not worth the bar oil if you are going to use it hard.

Gotta speak up for my time on Huskies. I have put them through some real tough long hours and days. Will admitt that I have never run one through anything bigger than 24". Nothing against Stihl's though just never punished one like the Husqvarna's. Either way you seem to be looking at a quality saw.

This place has them for 639. +/-http://www.shindaiwa.com/products/chain_saws/ch757.html

Tey are well built saws. Mine is over ten yrs. old. I only use it seasonally and it still cranks right up!

forgot to mention that one -- all our saws use oregon chain(we buy it in bulk and make them ourselves) and when the bars wear out we replace them with oregon bars.

i don't think anybody makes a better chain than oregon, especially their chisel tooth stuff that just rips through wood and blows out 3" strips instead of chips

Wasnt their a cabide or diamond tipped chain? And I have not done chains in almost 5 years. Counting each link!

I have only use the Husky in your initial two pics and it can definately take serious abuse and then some. I don't think you could go wrong with either of those saws so it really comes down to price and features you are looking for.

Well, after more research it seems there are no place to get parts in my area for a Husky which is pretty depressing.... I am torn between the 455 (Rancher) and the Stihl MS310 which I can get for $370 with a case/20 inch bar.
