AVG virus software won't uninstall

I purchased the AVG anti virus software a few weeks back to try out on my PIII 500.
I am now running it on my new PC, and I regret it.

I guess when I got the program a few weeks back I down loaded the wrong one.
I got a trial version of #7 which expires after one month or so of usage.
It has the reminder splash screen that pops up when you enter into Windows.

I found out the other day the correct version to DL for use at home and free of any nag screens is version 6.
I have the file, but have not executed it, reason being the trial version won't uninstall.

I have tried it from Safemode, and no luck.
It has a few parts of it which load up at boot up, and I have deselected them with the system config tool in XP, and still no luck.

I'm afraid if I just delete the folder it will screw things up with the Registry?
I did move the folder to a backup one and rebooted, and no error messages though.

The free version I want to install goes into it's own folder, and is different than the trial versions folder.
Can I just execute the new one and tell it to install it to the trial versions folder?

Forget about contacting AVG, they write back to you and won't help you since you have a trial version, or the free one.
I'm at a loss here right now on what to do about this, except for formatting and get rid of this aggressive program.

I can purchase the trail version for around $33 or so, but I'd rather use the free one if you know what I mean.

Thanks for any help,

If you do the start> run> msconfig. You can uncheck the program from the startup tab so it does not run at boot up. You should be able to uninstall it after that.

XP Pro has the System Restore feature, although you'll lose everything done after AVG install.

Pigcake, I deselected all the files to do with it last night with sys config, and it still won't uninstall.
It's an agressive bugger.

BT, I'd lose to much if I went back in time, as I have been installing stuff like crazy here.
I think I will just delete the folder and deselect all the boot up stuff for it, and call it good.

Shame on me for getting the wrong program, I was unawre of this when the post came up a few weeks back about getting the cool program.
Wish I had just stuck with my Mcafee, it's never let me down.

Problem solved

Well, $33 later, I now own the program.
I talked with the guy on the phone where you purchase it at, and he said even the free version 6 times out after so many days.

The version I have is more updated than the free one, and now the nag screen is gone, all is good

I still don't like the fact though that it would not uninstall.
The error message was that a "run once" file could not be taken off, and like I mentioned, all was turned off in the boot up stuff via the msconfig tool.

That sucks that you were having trouble with it.

How do you like version 7 over 6?

I never had version 6 the free one, only the trial version 7, which is now the full blown product after paying the $$$ for it.

To be honest with you, I think I like it better than Mcafee
I have used Mcafee since '95 or so.

This takes up less foot print, but a few things I still like better with Mcafee, but I'll get use to this.

It puts an icon in Outlook mail, just like Mcafee does, but when I click the Mcafee button to scan my inbox, the AGV one pops up first.
It's aggressively trying to oust Mcafee
The Mcafee virus email scan box pops up behind the AGV one.

I like how the AGV strips out the 100 kb Sobig virus file, and puts in in a new category called AGV Virus Vault in my inbox.
The "live" virus and the info about the sender goes to another vault in which you can dump the virus, or do other things with it.

I am really starting to like it.
Just like Mcafee, you don't need to go to their site to update either engine or the DAT files.
It does it by itself daily at a preset time.
Mcafee is setup on mine to look for a new file whenever it detects my cable on, which is most of the time.

As I type this letter here, AGV has just warned me 4 times the Sobig virus is coming in.
I don't even see the email, it gets moved right to the two mentioned vaults.

I am getting about 200 or more of these Sobig viruses daily, most from the same user who I turned in today to his ISP, Ameritech of something like that.

That's a screwed up way for a company to sell some software. "Well, you can't remove it, but you can buy it if you don't like our splash screen "

I have version 6. From what I understand there's not much of a difference, then again I've never used 7. I think I might have to check it out...
