I cannot comment on Toyota's program, but as someone who was a Jaguar technician for over six years I would have chosen a different career path in terms of being a technician. I would have went to work on Caterpillar tractors instead.
I suggest checking it out http://www.cat.com/cda/layout?m=38370&x=7 I know a few guys who work on heavy equipment and they are paid well, union and don't have A-hole service managers breathing down their necks. From my experience, if you love working on cars in a few years you will hate it. |

I agree with paxil, you turn a hobby into a career, you will be looking for new hobbies. After working on other peoples junk all day it's just not fun working on your own anymore. Dealerships also have a lot of political game playing as well

I second CAT's Think Big program. I have a buddy in it and my dad has worked for a CAT dealer forever and I myself am thinking about going that route (4 1/2 yrs down the road lol). Great program, and company plus so much funner than cars. HAHA. My .02 cents

I got offered a job at the local Toyota dealership, typical "Be a lube tech for 3 months and we'll move you up" type job. Everyone I know that has taken this job has quit 6 months later because promised promotion never happens. I think it's just the dealership though.

Work on helicopters. Like auto techs, there's a pretty big demand for them, (at least out here anyways) and they make a crap ton of money. A friend of mine knows someone that is a helicopter tech (also knows how to fly them) and says they make about 100K a year. Not bad for working on motors and stuff like that for a living.

I just got hired on to a company that rebuilds CAT gear. They have more then doubled in size over the last few years, and plan on tripling within the next 5.
Good time to get in fellas, with my plant they hire only from within, unless they can't find somebody to fill the position. Therefore I start at an entry level position. Paid training, it will cost them around $80,000. Can't wait to start. I second not making your hobby a career.

I will be one soon, and I'll let you know then. I could probably find out the payscale from some of my friends at Longmont (now Interstate) Toyota. My dad's business might buy the Longmont Toyota building on S. Main in Longmont when they move out (off topic, sorry; but hey, this is the off topic section!).
I've read lots of NCF and Official Factory Service manuals, so I could already tell you a lot tech-wise, but you've probably already got that part covered. I'll get back with you later today with more details. |
