Angry Apartment living: noisy neighbors late @ night

I have noisy neighbors as it is whether its being her kids bouncing off the walls, the father of her kids coming over and leaving his car stereo cranked, or leaving the bathroom fan on that sounds to be out of balance and being left on for hours. Last night they took the noise to a whole new level. I went to bed at 12:40am and was woke up at 1:45am to hearing loud talking, running feet on the carport sidewalk, and loud laughing. I sat up and listened but it got quiet so I went back to sleep for ten minutes. I was again woke up by hearing loud talking from downstairs. The tenant and her new bf had friends over from what I assume was a night of bar hopping. they were loud, abnoxious sounding/drunk and doors were slamming. I was NOT going to deal with this. i feel I should not have to confront these people by asking them to quiet down. I called the police to handle the situation. I then went back to try to sleep. Then the phone rings. Its the responding officer if you can call him that. He is responding to this call via phone. LMFAO! He is asking what it is I am reporting even though I just got off the phone with dispatch & I had explained it all to her. I was so tired I could not recall every word he said to me. But I got something along the lines of "if their just talking loud and we cant hear it from fifty feet away then we cant do anything". I said alrighty and got off the phone. I went to bed again. They quieted down only to start up again. I called the police AGAIN and this time an officer/the same officer took the call. He shows up and drove up and down the complex looking for #9. Finally he pulls back and I point it out to him. He gets out and does not even listen to hear them being loud. He starts in with if I contact them the department could be sued for bothering them.

If they are not being loud enough for us to hear them outside then we cannot do anything. I fealt like he was trying to get out of knocking on the door. I started walking back up the stairs to my apartment as if I was giving up on trying to get his help on the matter. he called me back telling me I need to expect the noise being I live in an apartment. So he goes and knocks and they tell him "no we were just watching tv" and he says I am the caller in which I am glad he did and they play nice neighbor and say "oh Ben is such a nice guy" and all that crap trying to play it off like I am making this up. So he leaves and they go back to talking loud and turn on their very loud bathroom fan that sounds to be out of balance. They left it on until 4am. that is about when I got to bed. I had to be right back up for work at 6:45AM. So whats the deal. Do I have to just expect the noise and live with it? I plan on complaining to the landlord but I think he see's her as a great tenant he has had for years. Thoughts?

in my building you can hear whenever anyone above me takes a single step. its annoying, but you need to get used to it, no matter how bad it is. it can be very obnoxious, having lived in very scummy areas during college where people would party till 4am every night and play music loud and blast their tvs and movies, i feel your pain.

it sounds like its gotten pretty bad with you though... you may want to pull out a video camera and tape the incidents... and play them for your landlord again. basically, in everyones lease there should be a stipulation that says 'no noise that can be heard outside your apt is allowed to be made after 11pm" or something similar.

good luck.

I hate that and have had the exact same problem many times. Asking them to quiet down never works, its a major PITA. My work schedual is similar in that I usually start working really early in the morning (5 or 6 am depending what route we are flying) if I didn't pull the previous night shift (untill 4am). I eventually invested in these:

They eventually make your ears sore though... so I simply blasted my music at 5am when I got up the next morning after they kept me up to 3am the morning before. The infractions have been less frequent since then. Two wrongs dont make a right though unfortunately. If you do choose this route, I found this to be the most effective:

Hope things improve!

Welcome to apartment life Ben.
I have lived in the same unit now since February of '95 after selling my nice quiet home after my first Boeing layoff in '94.

I have gone through many neighbors living here above and below including drug lords, prostitutes, you name it.

The new management we have now has really straightened up the place, and the only noise we have on weekends is from an occasional party which gets shutdown by a call to the police.

But in the past here I personally got a few families evicted.
One lady was downstairs and had two small kids.
She let the kids bounce a basketball on the floor and jump off the couches, and urinate outside the screen door.
The noise and stench from that place was horrible.
She was a crack head, and I personally was involved in getting her kids taken away from her from neglect.

The upstairs lady at the time was good friends with her, and also had a small girl.
She sold drugs out of her unit and had different guy's over all the time pounding the hell out of her bed frame.

Between all the drug traffic and noise from the two units it is amazing I did not kill anyone there.

But as new management moved in here, they really cleaned this place up.
Sounds like you need to have a pow wow with your management and tell them you will not tolerate noise past a certain time of night.
Or you could get revenge on these people.
You know they are going to try and sleep during the day time.

What I did in the past was fire up a good game on the PC and turned up the sub on one of my old PC sound systems.
Nothing like mortar fire or machine guns to rattle someone out of bed when they have a nice hangover from to much drinking.

Also that officer was very wrong in telling them that you were the caller.
He is not suppose to reveal that info, it is confidential.
He needs to go back through basic training, or get another job.

Ah the joys of apartment living!!!! There are 4 units in my building, which was an old victorian era home. The walls are paper thin. Just last night, around 1:30 I hear the neighbors in the hall YELLING "man, how much did you pug these brownies?!?!" So I go outside and I'm like, "Hey Scott, can you guys keep it down a bit?". "No problem bro, we're just havin a good time".

5 minutes later they're dancing around drunk, high, whatever, on the ROOF directly above my bedroom! I call the cops, they show up in 5 minutes, the people get down and goto bed. Case closed.

The thing is that this happens all of the time, it drives me CRAZY! I guess thats just apartment life.

Edit: I really should learn how to write better pseudo- BBB stories!

I am dragging arse today..... so.................tired...............it hurts. I am pondering how I should talk to my manager about this. I deal with confrontation every day at work doing what I do. I dont deal with it as much as I did when i worked for the casino thank god. Dealing with it at work is fine to a certain extent. its when i go home. I step out of the uniform and into plain clothes. The last thing i want to do is my job when I am off work but more so I do not want to do the officers job. the noise curfew is 10pm here but it only seems to work if your having a party or you live in a drug house. The cop suggested ear plugs but i do not feel I should have to step to that level. I pay rent their for a non stressful place to live. Its pretty bad when the downstairs neighbors are louder than the upstairs neighbors. I just want her neighborly respect. I am quiet, I keep to myself, I shovel our walk way, I pick her kids toys up from the lot so i dont run them over and respect her family. I just expect the same. not the shoveling part but it wouldnt be a bad idea for her bf to get off his arse and do it. back to being ....................tired.

When the kids are loud I am pretty good with my stomp of the foot tactic. They will stop 99% of the time. I fear wearing ear plugs to bed on weekends being i have to hear my alarm clock. my biggest fear is not waking up to it as is so i can only guess how scary it would be to wear ear plugs. I would be up every ten mins looking at the clock. I dont want to sink to their level and be noisy with paybacks. i want it to stop. If they want to live like loud pigs then they need a home not an apartment.

This is why I avoid apartments at all costs

Sucks to be you!

Like others have said though, it's best to get up early in the morning while they're hung over and be a loud arseloche.

I like Coreys the best with machine gun and mortar fire. Time to invest in a Logitech 5 piece speaker set and half-life 2

I had it cranked yesterday, but during the day time my neighbors do not mind as they have movies playing with their surround sound systems, but after 9 PM I turn it waaaaaaaaaaay down if I am in a game.

Ben, I have been wearing earplugs to bed on work nights for 25 years now.
I do not wear them during the weekend.
You can hear your alarm clock go off just fine, as I use to hear mine all the time.
However I no longer use one.

I am awakened 20 minutes or so each morning before I have to get up to work by an unseen force.
I shiest you not.
I wake up at about 1:45 am every morning before work.

I do that every now and then. Wake up 5 to 10 mins before the alarm goes off. Makes for a good start not hearing that beep beeep beeeep beeeepppppppp sound. I use to have this alarm that played a prerecorded rock tune that would scare me out of bed each morning.

I thought you lived in a nice house somewhere. I remember you were all excited to move out of an apartment to a house. That sucks to be back in an apartment.

I live in apartment complex that is solely college kids. Granted, I am one, too, but the night before a big football game, I would have to go to bed early so I could be awake at 6 for Marching Band practice, which completely sucks, another reason why I've quit. The drunk Ford fans that live next door would bring all their alchy friends over and would blast bad country music from a full surround sound and the 2 15's they had from some guy's truck. My room is right next to all this, and the best thing I can tell you is get earplugs. When this sort of stuff happens on a weeknight, I just go over, explain the situation and without fail they turn it down long enough for me to go to sleep. I have also been on the receiving end. Sometimes we're playing a game at 4 in the afternoon with my roomy's bad-ass speakers on full blast and we'll get a neighbor to come over and tell us she's studying, and we've always turned it down. The only time she did not come over was for a keg party and she called the cops. That was an interesting night, for sure. Just confront them and explain yourself, that normally gets the message across for us, and if that doesn't work, get some speakers, duct tape them to the wall and play some hard rock. Of course, our neighbors like it when we do that...

I would not sleep with ear plugs. They can restrict your hearing if a fire alarm goes off. All you can do is ask them to stop, the andlord to get them to stop, and get the police to make them stop. If they say you are harassing the police, it's not your fault, they aren't doing their job.

yeah thats the plan. as soon as i get off i am stopping by his place to file a complaint. It really sucks being the chick isnt that rude or anything. its her kids and friends. and her drunk excuses to the cops last night. I just cant get over the fact the cop didnt want to come up in the first place and then on the 2nd call he acted as if I was putting him out by asking for his help. Cops will ticket you for your car being parked the wrong way on the street, crossing a sidewalk at night, or simple crap but wont back you up when you need them. this cop has a bad rep for hasseling young drivers for simple crap. He just seems to be the I do what I wanna do and you dont tell me to do anything type. ranting mode off or i will burst. still running on tired fumes today. cant wait for a nap.
